August 20, 2011 ? 7:56 pm

CASPER, Wyo. ? Starting this week, the University of Wyomingbegan gift health insurance vouchers to made at home allies ofschool expertise and employees ? inclusive same-sex partners.

Though made at home allies still aren?t covered beneath UW?s healthinsurance program, it?s the initial time a Wyoming state group iscompensating insurance expenses for same-sex allies of itsworkers.

Under the program, that launched Monday, made at home allies ofUW employees can request for a $600-per-month document from theuniversity to pay for an outward health insurance plan, UW ProvostMyron Allen said. That?s rounded off the amount UW employees receiveunder the State of Wyoming?s family group insurance plan.

Currently, usually an employee?s associate and young kids are eligiblefor coverage beneath the state?s health insurance.

Allen estimated 30 to 60 made at home allies will request for thevouchers during the initial the number enrolled period, that ends Sept.15.

The vouchers will be paid for with income from UW?s externalresearch funding, many of that comes from the sovereign government,Allen said. No state appropriation is being used to account the vouchers, hesaid.

UW?s preference to casing the insurance expenses of made at home partners,Allen said, was made not for ideological reasons, but to make sure theschool can vie for tip expertise and administrativecandidates.

Most considerable universities and Fortune 500 companies offer suchbenefits, Allen said, and a few field for UW expertise andadministrative positions have asked him about UW?s policy. BesidesUW, usually two other schools in the Mountain West Conference ? AirForce and Boise State ? do not offer made at home partner insurancebenefits.

While there?s been opponent to UW covering insurance expenses forsame-sex partners, Allen mentioned the university would moreover facecriticism if it didn?t expand such benefits.

?If you do not offer made at home partner benefits, then people wantto know because not,? he said. ?It?s argumentative if you do not offerthe benefits, but it?s moreover controversial, I guess, with somepeople if you do.?

The UW Board of Trustees narrowly voted in favor of the voucherprogram in 2009, around the same time that Gov. Dave Freudenthalannounced 10 percent bill cuts for UW and many stateagencies.

As a result, Allen said, the university behind starting theprogram until now, as the college is in partially great financialshape.

State Rep. Cathy Connolly, D-Laramie, a UW women?s studiesprofessor, mentioned she knows at least one person who has alreadyregistered is to vouchers. The benefits of the program, she said,go far over creation UW more popular to prospective recruits.

?This affects actual people?s lives,? she said. ?Health insuranceis not a gain ? it?s a necessity in today?s society. And tonot have it puts you and your family at extensive risk.?

When the document module was granted in 2009, severallegislators disturbed that it would open the doorway to offeringinsurance benefits for same-sex allies of all stateemployees.

But many state lawmakers mentioned Friday that they do not design tosee that come about in the foreseeable future.

?The university is more of its own entity ? it?s a state entitythat we, in some respects, account separately,? mentioned state Sen. BillLanden, R-Casper. ?I?m not adage that the other agencies wouldn?tmove in that direction, but I would think that (will) not(happen) anytime soon.?
