R32Media ? Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Go! Review Podcast Network ...

I have used many setups in my Podcasting history, and will probably use many many more. Recently, I have been trying to get louder sound out of my current setup, and I was pretty sure my problem was related to my current mixer, the Behringer Xenyx 802
. I was going into my MacBook Pro via two analog cables, and the setup was working fine but it seemed that I had to have my volume controls really high to get a decent loudness. In all honestly it was probably good enough the way it was, but I wanted to get a louder sound similar to Adam Curry and TWiT podcasts. Both of these had nice undistorted sound that doesn?t require cranking up the volume to hear the audio.

Recently I had been messing with my mixer settings and I settled on the settings in the image below.

Like I said, I was pretty content with the audio quality I was getting from this setup, but I knew it could be better. In the past I have heard that people often use USB audio sound card adapters to avoid extra noise when recording podcasts. On a whim I decided to pick one of these up to see if it would make any difference in my current setup. The other option was getting a better mixer.

Initially I was looking for a Griffin iMic but didn?t find any at my local big box store (Yodobashi Camera in Japan), so while looking through the store I found a similar unit from Creative Labs. The Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Go! is what it?s called and it cost like 2400 Yen.

Instead of plugging directly into my MacBook Pro?s input and output jacks, you use this USB adapter. Here is a picture of how it looks.

After doing some test recordings I realized that the volume was really loud and clipped. I had to really back off and fine tune the settings to get a good sound. It was tricky to get it dialed in but once I did, the recording volume was higher, which is what I wanted. Here are my current mixer settings with the Creative USB adapter plugged in.

I am still dialing these settings in but for now I have managed to get a good sound without any extra noise. For about $30 (USD), I am really impressed with the results I am getting!

On a side note, I can now plug in my mixer to my PC too. Before, I would get major line noise from the built in sound card, which made it just about impossible to get a clean recording.
