High temperatures at the Okefenokee Humane Society animal shelter in Georgia have taken the lives of 14 dogs in three months.
The shelter, which has no electricity, can house up to 100 dogs and 20 cats, according to The Associated Press. The lack of electricity has made the job of cooling the animals difficult.
Volunteers brought in fans and extension cords, but many have been stolen according to Examiner.com.
In an effort to cool the animals, the shelter volunteers have provided them with frozen water bottles and lightly sprayed them with water often.
Despite their efforts, heatstroke continues to take a toll.Georgia Power arrived on the scene and worked overnight earlier this week to wire the kennels for electricity.
"Temperatures reached 100 degrees on Thursday and the Realfeel? temperature during the afternoon ranged from 106-112 degrees," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist, Kristina Pydynowski.
The fans should help lower the temperatures in the shelter, but shelter workers are asking for more volunteers and donations to help with the situation.
