Coming Out of Our Spiritual Train-Wreck

~by Tommy and Angie Prince

What is it about...

"In this world you will have trouble/suffering"

that we don't understand?

Look at Jesus' life ~God's own Son~ and you will see suffering. Even He was not exempt. Why then do we somehow think we are exempt?

Predominantly, what's being preached from behind today's pulpit is "blessings-and-prosperity," and "trouble-and-suffering" are treated as just minor inconveniences. There is a mindset --- ?

"If you do everything right, you will be exempt from suffering, and all will turn out well,"?

where it could be argued that the apostle Paul and the disciples looked forward to suffering. It is what happens when we stand against evil.?

The "normal" for the disciple of Christ then is suffering; the abnormal for His disciple is the absence of suffering.
If they listened to Me, they will listen to you. If they hated Me, then they will hate You. If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you.?(John 15:20)

There is also a mindset in today's church that many of us Child-Loss Grievers have come up against that can be so completely demoralizing on top of our already considerable angst, and that is that?

"Any bad experience that might occur is one that should be overcome quickly and with little suffering, and 'victory' declared within a few months at most."

Child-Loss-Grievers' lives then become an anomaly that needs to be pushed into the shadows for no one to observe as our burden of grief is viewed as if it were an affront to God, as if we were one "cursed," certainly not blessed.

But God Himself says,
"Blessed are you that mourn for you will be comforted."

When fellow brothers and sisters in the faith avoid us, He Himself comes alongside to enter into our depth of pain, to ensure that we have His comfort.

If indeed "Normal" is defined as trouble-and-suffering for a child of God, in what then do we put our Hope?

If it is in our circumstances alone, then it follows we are in trouble spiritually as "we are of all people most to be pitied..."

1 Corinthians 15:19
...?If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people?most?to be?pitied.?...

But Jesus says,

In this world you WILL HAVE TROUBLE, BUT be of GOOD CHEER--- (Why? Because Jesus declares,) FOR I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD.

John 16:33 ?I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.?

HE is our HOPE ~ not circumstances...

Everyone has the potential of becoming successful in the future. It takes someone who has good grades to become an engineer. A person who has a good voice can participate in various competitions before becoming a seasoned singer. The same determination is also needed should one decide to become a magician.

In medieval times, magic was associated with sorcery and witchcraft. People who were known to posses these skills were considered as heretics and were burned at the stake. Years later that has changed and now magic provides people with various kinds of entertainment, e.g., watching the statue of liberty disappear with just a wink of an eye or putting a person in a box and piercing it with swords and the volunteer comes out unscathed. These are all illusions that have amazed the audience and makes these people come back for more.

There have been a lot of talented magicians in this lifetime alone such as the likes of Harry Houdini who was an escaped artist, David Copperfield who has traveled around the world and amazed people with his large scale acts and lately David Blaine who is seen on television performing magic tricks for millions of viewers around the world.

With these wonders of magic, will there still be qualms why would one want to become a magician?

Others may also just opt to become one for the money. Talent fees to appear before live audiences cost a lot and with more bookings, such a magician could make a fortune. Some magicians who have become celebrities can now get endorsements from various companies and get a talent fee for promoting that brand.

There are also individuals who want to become magicians for the love of it. Some people believe that doing something feels better if one has the passion for it. Money is just a perk in the trade but if that person wants to take it to the limit and stand out above the rest, then a feeling of self accomplishment is fulfilled making that person prepare once again for the next challenge.

Some people grew up with magicians as role models. Why not? Magicians can turn one's rueful mood into an amazed one. What could be more fun and fulfilling than making people forget their worries and stressful situations? Becoming a magician is truly such a rewarding profession.

The reason behind one's intention on learning to be a good magician may vary. But one thing is for sure, magicians are here to pepper life with some fun from bewilderment. Whatever the reason one magician may have as to why he continues to perform tricks is not important. What matters is they make life less of a bore.

Romney: US has duty to protect Israel

In Jerusalem Sunday, Mitt Romney said the U.S. should "employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course." NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

By NBC's Garrett Haake

?

?

JERUSALEM ? Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney told an audience of supporters here Sunday that the United States has a "solemn duty and a moral imperative" to do whatever necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons that could threaten the existence of Israel, a vital American ally.

Romney focused on the specter of a nuclear-capable Iran and pledged the U.S. would never forget past horrors or turn its back on Israel.

"When Iran?s leaders deny the Holocaust or speak of wiping this nation off the map, only the na?ve ? or worse ? will dismiss it as an excess of rhetoric. Make no mistake: The ayatollahs in Tehran are testing our moral defenses," Romney said. "They want to know who will object, and who will look the other way. My message to the people of Israel and the leaders of Iran is one and the same: We will not look away, and nor will my country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

"We have a solemn duty and a moral imperative to deny Iran?s leaders the means to follow through on their malevolent intentions," Romney said.

Speaking in Jerusalem, Mitt Romney says, preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons "must be our highest national security priority." Watch his entire speech.

Romney reiterated his belief that Iran is a vexing national concern to both Israel and the U.S. ? suggesting, as a Romney aide did earlier today that the U.S. would not block a unilateral Israeli strike against Iran's nuclear program if diplomatic options failed.

Mitt Romney would respect Israel strike on Iran, aide says

"We should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is our fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so," Romney said. "In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded. We recognize Israel's right to defend itself and that it is right for America to stand with you."

Presumptive GOP candidate Mitt Romney spoke outside the Old City on Sunday, where he said he supports Israel's right to defend itself against the threat of a nuclear Iran. He is in Israel as part of a three-nation foreign diplomatic tour which also includes visits to Poland and the U.K.

Romney had nothing but kind words for his host nation, praising Israeli values as fitting hand-in-glove with America's.

"Our two nations are separated by more than 5,000 miles. But for an American abroad, you can?t get much closer to the ideals and convictions of my own country than you do in Israel," Romney said. "We?re part of the great fellowship of democracies. We speak the same language of freedom and justice and the right of every person to live in peace."

Mitt Romney visits Western Wall, one of holiest sites in Judaism

In a line clearly inserted for his audience, Romney said it was "a deeply moving experience to be in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel," earning his longest sustained ovation. (Israelis consider the united Jerusalem their capital, but many nations, including the U.S., have their embassies in Tel Aviv.)

The speech here Sunday capped a whirlwind day for the former Massachusetts governor, who met with top Israeli political leaders, Daniel Shapiro, the U.S. Ambassador to Israel appointed by Obama and Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. He visited one of Judaism's most holy sites, the Western Wall, and will dine, with wife Ann and son Josh, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his family.

A cadre of top Romney donors, including New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, attended the speech and will also take part in a fundraising breakfast Monday that is expected to bring in seven figures for the campaign's war chest.

Political analysts have said that for Romney to win over Israelis (and perhaps American Jews and other supporters of Israel in the U.S.), he would need to show more warmth than President Barack Obama in his personal dealings here. Romney endeavored to do just that all day, calling Netanyahu, "my friend Benjamin Netanyahu."

He also chatted up Fayyed about the 2012 London Games.

Concluding his remarks Sunday, Romney alluded to the importance of presenting a united front with his host country.

"Standing by Israel does not mean with military and intelligence cooperation alone. We cannot stand silent as those who seek to undermine Israel voice their criticisms," Romney said. "And we certainly should not join in that criticism. Diplomatic distance in our public, between our nations, emboldens Israel's adversaries."

Toronto mayor greets top Hollywood comedians

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford delivered a "special gift" to a pair of Hollywood comedians on Monday afternoon, during a promotional event for a new film that chronicles the misadventures of two political rivals ahead of an election.

Ford met comedians Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis at the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The mayor presented them with miniature versions of the Stanley Cup, as well as some of his leftover campaign bumper stickers.

Ferrell thanked museum officials and the mayor for their hospitality, while also poking fun at local hockey fans.

"It's exciting to be here, representing Los Angeles, the home of the Stanley Cup," a stone-faced Ferrell declared to mock boos and hisses from the audience.

"[It was a] hard-fought battle. Los Angeles is the best team in the NHL. But you know what? Toronto's a great city too and one day you will hoist that magnificent cup above your head. And let's have a quick shout-out for Yellowknife, OK?"

Ferrell also claimed that the Hockey Hall of Fame was allowing he and his co-star to "take home six of our favourite pieces of memorabilia."

"It's really, really nice of you guys and very trusting of us," said Ferrell.

Ferrell and Galifianakis are in Toronto promoting their upcoming film The Campaign, which opens Aug. 10.

"When long-term Congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of unscrupulous power brokers plots to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: na?ve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local tourism centre," said a news release describing the premise of the movie.

Mechanism of lung cancer-associated mutations suggests new therapeutic approaches

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center researchers have identified how one of the genes most commonly mutated in lung cancer may promote such tumors.

The investigators found that the protein encoded by this gene, called EPHA3, normally inhibits tumor formation, and that loss or mutation of the gene -- as often happens in lung cancer -- diminishes this tumor-suppressive effect, potentially sparking the formation of lung cancer. The findings, published July 24 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, could offer direction for personalizing cancer treatments and development of new therapies.

The ephrin family of receptors (EPH receptors) comprises a large group of cell surface proteins that regulate cell-to-cell communication in normal development and disease. EPH receptor mutations have been linked to several different cancer types.

Jin Chen, M.D., Ph.D., professor of Medicine, Cancer Biology and Cell & Developmental Biology, studies the cancer-associated roles of these receptors. While her lab has focused primarily on EPHA2 (and its role in promoting breast cancer and tumor blood vessel formation), she decided to look at a different ephrin receptor based on the findings of large genomic screens of lung tumors.

"A 2008 genome-wide study published in Nature identified 26 genes as potential drivers of lung cancer," Chen said. "One of them was EPHA3."

That study and others suggested that mutations in EPHA3 were present in 5 percent to 10 percent of lung adenocarcinomas. However, the studies did not reveal how these mutations might promote tumor formation or progression.

Chen wanted to investigate further whether mutations in EPHA3 were actually "drivers" of lung cancer or just neutral "passenger" mutations and how the mutations might promote tumor growth.

The researchers generated and analyzed 15 different mutations in the receptor. They found that at least two functioned as "dominant negative" inhibitors of the EPHA3 protein -- that is, having a mutation in just one allele (or "copy" -- humans have two copies of each gene) was enough to inhibit the function of EPHA3.

Chen and colleagues determined that normal or "wild type" EPHA3 inhibits a downstream signaling pathway (the Akt pathway) that promotes cell survival -- so, normally, activation of EPHA3 acts as a "brake" on cell growth and survival and induces programmed cell death (apoptosis). When one EPHA3 allele is lost (due to a mutation), the receptor cannot be activated and the Akt pathway remains active, which promotes cell growth and survival.

To determine the impact of EPHA3 mutations on human lung cancer cases, biostatisticians Yu Shyr, Ph.D., and Fei Ye, Ph.D., helped Chen's group identify a mutational signature from existing patient data that strongly correlated with poor patient survival. The team also found that both gene and protein levels of EPHA3 were decreased in patient lung tumors.

While previous studies had linked EPHA3 mutations to lung cancer, the current study is the first to "connect the dots."

"The EPH family is such a big family that nobody had really connected the data from bench top -- from the cell and biochemical studies -- to human data," Chen said.

Together, the findings suggest that mutations in EPHA3 may be important drivers of a significant fraction of lung cancers. And the research team's identification of the biochemical and cellular consequences of EPHA3 mutations suggests that therapies that target a downstream pathway (such as Akt) might be beneficial for tumors with mutant EPHA3.

The Star's recommendation | KC's new sales tax is the wrong plan at ...

Investing more dollars to improve parks and roads in Kansas City sounds like an attractive idea.

Unfortunately, the plan to increase the sales tax by a half cent to tackle these tasks ? spelled out in Question 1 on the Aug. 7 ballot ? is unappealing. The Star?s editorial board recommends a no vote on this proposal. It is ill-timed, confusing and ultimately unsupportable.Difficult financial times require the most judicious tax increase requests. And while it was a tough call to reject the worthy goals of this ballot issue, the plan in Question 1 doesn?t pass muster. Among our many concerns: ??Removal of three small property taxes, buried in current tax bills, isn?t a significant tax break and no urgent rationale exists to remove them. While the public generally is less hostile to sales taxes than property taxes, the temptation to hike sales taxes as the revenue source of least resistance isn?t a good enough reason to support Question 1. The Citizens Commission on Municipal Revenue recommended eliminating the three property taxes but partly as a way to offer stormwater customers some rate relief. This plan ignores that goal altogether.??The ballot language is unnecessarily obtuse. And clear ballot explanations are sorely lacking. Even city officials questioned last week by the editorial board stumbled in discussing exactly how much extra money could be available for roads and parks in the future. Road maintenance spending figures in particular rose and fell during the discussion, as more pots of public funds were revealed. And after a ?final? figure for road improvements was announced, a campaign staff email hours later claimed the total revenue was millions higher.??Given the large number of tax-increment financing deals in effect, those projects would skim $4 million off the top of new sales tax proceeds. That?s great news for projects but cuts into the intended benefits for roads and parks.??The request comes before the city has demonstrated its ability to significantly cut costs in pensions, health care and other big-ticket items that must be addressed to secure the city?s long-term financial health. A show of good faith in those areas would put the city on stronger footing to request more taxes from its residents. Mayor Sly James deserves credit for helping to restore credibility to the mayor?s office and instilling a sense of pride and confidence in Kansas City?s future. City officials do appear headed in the right direction on reforming costly pension systems, the Fire Department and tax-break programs. However, the city has not made enough progress on these issues to warrant handing over an extra $23 million a year in higher taxes, which is effectively what Question 1 would do.And then there is the campaign literature beef. Mailed ads have not mentioned the bottom line that swapping some property taxes for a sales tax would result in a tax increase. The defeat of Question 1 would hardly cripple local government. It would force the city staff to find money in the $500 million general fund to continue operating the community centers, just as the staff found millions extra this year to finance unanticipated buyouts for retiring firefighters. If the tax loses, James and the council should continue to explore a future capital improvement program that could be financed through a large bond program, something he floated earlier this year. The city also could ask voters to resurrect the vehicle license fee and finance road improvements, making it a logical user fee.If voters reject Question 1, we?re confident City Hall can develop a better proposal to finance needed infrastructure upgrades. Voters, and The Star, have a long history of supporting positive, clear-cut plans.

Anti-Trump doc tops IMDb list of British movies

Montrose Pictures

"You've Been Trumped" poster.

By The Wrap.com

Here's more proof that everything Donald Trump does is the biggest and the best: A new documentary about Trump's construction of a golf course is Scotland has only been out in the U.K. for two weeks, but in that time it has become the highest-rated British film of all time on IMDb.

That's right: according to the website's users, "You've Been Trumped" is better than "Lawrence of Arabia," better than "The Bridge on the River Kwai," better than "The King's Speech," better than any other British production ever.

(One caveat: British-born directors Alfred Hitchcock and Christopher Nolan each placed a pair of films higher on the list - but in all four cases, those films were funded, set and shot in the U.S.)

"You've Been Trumped," shot in Scotland and made by Scottish director Anthony Baxter, has a current user rating of 8.5 among what IMDb called "regular users," whose rankings determine the site's charts. That ties the film with "Citizen Kane," "Dr. Strangelove," "Taxi Driver," "North by Northwest," "City Lights" and "American Beauty" (the last three American productions from British-born directors) as the 35th greatest movie of all time.

On the separate documentary chart, it ranks third, just behind the Alain Resnais' 1955 landmark "Night and Fog" and, in an indication of how early enthusiasm can skew the charts, the recent doc about the 1992 Lithuanian Olympic basketball team, "The Other Dream Team."

The Donald would no doubt appreciate and even expect the superlatives, if not for the fact that "You've Been Trumped" is a virulently anti-Trump movie. A chronicle of how Trump purchased hundreds of acres to build a golf course on the northeast coast of Scotland, near the location of the 1983 film "Local Hero," it details land grabs, local protests and roughshod environmental practices undertaken with the cooperation of Scottish officials.

Trump, meanwhile, insists that the construction will be "environmentally perfect," while dismissing an angry local with lines like, "He lives like a pig."

"The Trump who appears in Baxter's film is a bully and a blowhard," wrote Sports Illustrated's Michael Bamberger, who liked the movie but thinks the man is slightly more nuanced than that.

The film has won awards at several international film festivals, notwithstanding the fact that Trump himself has reportedly called it "boring."

"You've Been Trumped" will be released in Los Angeles - where Trump fought a few more battles building a golf course in Palos Verdes - on Aug. 17.

Critics, by the way, have been only marginally less enthusiastic than IMDb users. The film stands at 92 percent positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which places it above "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild" but below "Moonrise Kingdom" and "The Invisible War."?

Some Florida lawmakers see wealth rise while in office

Public office has been good to the bottom line of many state lawmakers, for some much more than others, two new analyses of publicly available financial disclosure forms show.

Florida state senators have grown their wealth by an average of $800,000 since taking office, according to a study to be released Monday by the Tallahassee group Integrity Florida.

But the opposite is true for members of the Florida House, who generally have not been in office as long and have seen their investments decline thanks to the real estate bust. Their net worths ? calculated as assets minus debt ? have dropped about $100,000 on average.

New research confirms efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression

New research confirms efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression

    Friday, July 27, 2012

In one of the first studies to look at transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in real-world clinical practice settings, researchers at Butler Hospital, along with colleagues across the U.S., confirmed that TMS is an effective treatment for patients with depression who are unable to find symptom relief through antidepressant medications. The study findings are published online in the June 11, 2012 edition of Depression and Anxiety in the Wiley Online Library.

Previous analysis of the efficacy of TMS has been provided through more than 30 published trials, yielding generally consistent results supporting the use of TMS to treat depression when medications aren't sufficient. "Those previous studies were key in laying the groundwork for the FDA to approve the first device for delivery of TMS as a treatment for depression in 2008," said Linda Carpenter, MD, lead author of the report and chief of the Mood Disorders Program and the Neuromodulation Clinic at Butler Hospital. "Naturalistic studies like ours, which provide scrutiny of real-life patient outcomes when TMS therapy is given in actual clinical practice settings, are the next step in further understanding the effectiveness of TMS. They are also important for informing healthcare policy, particularly in an era when difficult decisions must be made about allocation of scarce resources."

Carpenter explains that naturalistic studies differ from controlled clinical trials because they permit the inclusion of subjects with a wider range of symptomatology and comorbidity, whereas controlled clinical trials typically have more rigid criteria for inclusion. "As a multisite study collecting naturalistic outcomes from patients in clinics in various regions in the U.S., we were also able to capture effects that might arise from introducing a novel psychiatric treatment modality like TMS in non-research settings," said Carpenter. In all, the study confirms how well TMS works in diverse settings where TMS is administered to a real-life population of patients with depression that have not found relief through many other available treatments.

The published report summarized data collected from 42 clinical TMS practice sites in the US, and included outcomes from 307 patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) who had persistent symptoms despite the use of antidepressant medication. Change during TMS was assessed using both clinicians' ratings of overall depression severity and scores on patient self-report depression scales, which require the patient to rate the severity of each symptom on the same standardized scale at the end of each 2-week period. Rates for "response" and "remission" to TMS were calculated based on the same cut-off scores and conventions used for other clinical trials of antidepressant treatments. Fifty-eight percent positive response rate to TMS and 37 percent remission rate were observed.

"The patient outcomes we found in this study demonstrated a response rate similar to controlled clinical trial populations," said Dr. Carpenter, explaining that this new data validates TMS efficacy in treating depression for those who have failed to benefit from antidepressant medications. "Continued research and confirmation of the effectiveness of TMS is important for understanding its place in everyday psychiatric care and to support advocacy for insurance coverage of the treatment." Thanks in part to the advocacy efforts of Dr. Carpenter, TMS was recently approved for coverage by Medicare in New England, and it is also now covered by BCBSRI. "Next steps for TMS research involve enhancing our understanding of how to maintain positive response to TMS over time after the course of therapy ends and learning how to customize the treatment for patients using newer technologies, so TMS can help even more patients."

Romney struggles to stem his own Olympics fallout

LONDON (AP) ? Mitt Romney struggled Friday to stem political fallout at home after insulting Britain's handling of the London Games. The stumble at least briefly pitted the Republican presidential candidate against America's strongest ally while limiting his ability to capitalize on more troubling U.S. economic news.

At the same time, President Barack Obama used his office to try to take advantage of the Republican's missteps abroad, praising Britain for its Olympics preparations one day and sending money to Israel the next ? just as Romney prepared to visit that nation.

The confluence of events ? just as the world focused on London's opening ceremonies ? confounded Republicans and tickled Democrats. People in both parties wondered aloud how the former Massachusetts governor could have complicated the opening leg of a three-nation tour carefully crafted to highlight his diplomatic strengths and personal Olympic experience.

"You have to shake your head," GOP strategist Karl Rove said Friday on Fox News.

It was unclear just how much damage Romney, who had hoped to burnish his limited foreign policy credentials, did with an American electorate that hasn't fully tuned into the race. But he certainly stoked talk in political circles in Washington, if not elsewhere, of political tone-deafness, and he raised questions about his readiness to stand on the world stage.

He drew more attention Friday night when he attended the opening ceremonies. Just as the show was about to begin, one BBC host noted that Britain's team was ready for the games ? "despite what Mitt Romney says."

Publicly at least, Romney's campaign shrugged it all off as having little impact on American voters and moved aggressively to change the subject. His aides hastily organized a conference call with reporters to discuss his schedule in Jerusalem and preview a speech there two days away.

British press reports laced with lingering resentment targeting Romney's initial comment ? that problems with Olympic preparations were "disconcerting" ? made it difficult for him to turn the page.

A day after London Mayor Boris Johnson assailed Romney by name in a rally before tens of thousands, Britain's Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the cabinet minister in charge of the Olympics, lashed out at him.

"When we have the opening ceremony tonight and we tell the world that eight of the world's top 10 sports were either invented or codified in Britain ? and only two in America ? I hope Mr. Romney is watching," he said Friday.

Seeking to quiet the uproar in its second full day, Romney declared on NBC: "It looks to me like London is ready." He also observed, "It is hard to put on the games in a major metropolitan area." Asked about the stir, he said, "I'm absolutely convinced that the people here are ready for the games, and in just a few moments, all the things the politicians say will be swept away" by excitement over the competition.

Romney's trip comes just over 100 days before an election that is expected to be close and, for now at least, is dominated by the economy's sluggish recovery.

Underscoring it, the Commerce Department released new numbers Friday showing that the U.S. economic growth slowed to an annual rate of 1.5 percent from April through June, as Americans cut back on spending.

But, because he was overseas, Romney was in no position to try to leverage the latest figures for political gain. He's spent his entire campaign doing that to press his argument that Obama has had long enough to spark the economy and has failed.

Romney was keeping to his promise not to criticize Obama directly while on foreign soil. Instead, he dispatched a series of allies to lambaste the president.

"Despite a string of bad economic reports, President Obama refuses to change course," said Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a potential Romney running mate.

As Romney was dealing with the Olympics slip, the White House on Thursday emphasized that Obama was on Britain's side, a suggestion that Romney was not.

Said press secretary Jay Carney: "In keeping with our special relationship, the president also made it clear that he has the utmost confidence in our close friend and ally, the United Kingdom, as they finalize preparations to host the London Olympics."

By Friday, Obama, himself, sought to upstage his Republican opponent.

One day before Romney's visit to Israel, Obama signed legislation increasing military and civilian ties between the U.S. and Israel. And he authorized the release of an additional $70 million in military aid for Israel, a previously announced move that appeared timed to Romney's trip.

While Obama sometimes signs bills in private, the White House invited reporters and photographers into the Oval Office ? and made sure the cameras captured both the signing and the president flanked by Jewish-American leaders.

Obama never mentioned Romney or the election in his brief remarks. But he did use the opportunity to trumpet what he called his administration's "unshakable commitment to Israel." He added: "I have made it a top priority for my administration to deepen cooperation with Israel across a whole spectrum of security issues ? intelligence, military, technology."

The new money is aimed at helping Israel expand production of a short-range rocket defense system, called Iron Drone, that can block fire from nearby Gaza and other places.

Obama's move underscored the advantages that come with running as an incumbent: He has the power to authorize tangible assistance to Israel, while Romney can only make promises.

Obama made his own minor slip during the signing, first saying he was authorizing $70 million, then changing the sum to $70 billion even though the lower figure was correct.

Seeking to counter Romney's appearance at the Games, Obama's campaign also rolled out a television advertisement for American audiences during the opening ceremonies featuring the president promoting his middle-class economic agenda. It was a way for Obama to guarantee himself a presence during the event that Romney was attending. First lady Michelle Obama is attending Olympic events in London.

Romney, for his part, is to leave London on Saturday. His efforts to highlight his leadership during the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City were lost.

Even as he sought to strike a cautious stance Friday, Romney raised eyebrows anew when he referred to looking out of the "back side" of 10 Downing St., Cameron's residence, to see the beach volleyball stadium. The term "back side" is the common local term for derriere.

Michelle Obama says "in awe" of Team USA

LONDON (Reuters) - First Lady Michelle Obama told American Olympians on Friday that it was an "otherworldly" experience for her to be in London to witness them compete on the world stage.

"Some of my fondest memories growing up and even as an adult for that matter involved watching the Olympics on TV. I know each of you probably were in that position," she said while addressing the U.S. team ahead of the Opening Ceremony later in the day.

"Being here is otherworldly for me, you know. I am still so inspired by all of you. I am still in awe of everything you have achieved."

She added with a smile: "Try to have fun. Try to breathe a little bit. But also win, right? In the end winning is good."

As part of her visit as the lead of the U.S. Olympic delegation, she is expected to attend a reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace and meet Samantha Cameron, the wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The highlight of her visit will be the Opening Ceremony - a three-hour extravaganza at the Olympic stadium built in a previously run-down area of east London.

The ceremony, due to be watched by a global audience of more than one billion people, begins at 2000 GMT.

Speaking at the University of East London, where American athletes have a training facility, Obama said watching the Games had inspired her father, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, to retain his athletic spirit.

"In a matter of several years he went from a man who was once a thriving competitor - he was a boxer and swimmer throughout high school - and then he was stripped of all of his hopes," she said.

"But he retained his love of sports truly. And the Olympics was a special time for him to watch amazing athletes of all abilities compete on the world stage...So these games especially affected our little house on the south side of Chicago."

She and U.S. President Barack Obama have taken an active interest in the Olympic movement, travelling to Copenhagen in 2009 to pitch Chicago's failed bid to land the 2016 Summer Games, which will be hosted by Rio de Janeiro.

She has also spearheaded efforts to get children physically fit in a country where obesity is on the rise.

"You never know who you are inspiring. You just never know. From a family like ours on the south side of Chicago to young athletes who are going to pick up a soccer ball or start running after watching something that you all do," she said.

"I know for many of you that's how you got here watching someone else ... we are proud of you all. And try to have some fun." PBS video mashup honors 'Joy of Painting' host

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? On the heels of PBS' hit Mister Rogers video mashup, a second public TV favorite is getting the star treatment.

PBS said Thursday it has posted a video remix with clips from "The Joy of Painting" instructional series, featuring the late Bob Ross.

The "Happy Painter" remix is from John Boswell, who created the "Garden of Your Mind" video tribute to Fred Rogers. That mashup of clips from "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" has been viewed nearly 6 million times on YouTube.

"The Joy of Painting," still seen in repeats, aired on PBS from 1983 to 1994 with its bushy-haired, mellow-voiced host. Ross died in 1995 of cancer at age 52.

The two PBS Digital Studios mashups are the start of a "PBS icons remixed" series that's intended to get people talking about public TV and to support their local PBS stations.

Boswell, also known as Melodysheep, has done autotuned video pieces featuring prominent scientists including Neil deGrasse Tyson and the late Carl Sagan.
