Israel: Child abuse rates in Israel now higher than in US

Reports of child abuse in Israel have steadily grown over the past three years, as the number of reported cases in the US is decreasing, according to recent data the Jerusalem-based Haruv Institute collected and provided to The Jerusalem Post this week.

The data presented by the institute, which not only researches the phenomenon but also provides training to professionals working in the medical, educational and community fields, shows that in Israel in 2010 the number of reported child abuse cases was 18.9 for every 1,000 children, compared to 8.7 for every 1,000 children in 1995. The US figures for 2010 were 10 reports for every 1,000 children, compared to 14.7 reports for every 1,000 children in 1995.

While part of the rise in reporting of child abuse cases in Israel stems from greater awareness among professionals and society as to what constitutes abuse and how to report it, Haruv Institute director Prof. Asher Ben-Arieh said it has more to do with an alarming increase in violence throughout Israeli society in general.

?We are definitely a much more violent society than ever before,? said Ben-Arieh, who before being appointed director of Haruv late last year worked as associate director at the National Council for the Child.

The figures for Israel are based on data collected by the NCC and Haruv from child protection officers and social workers.

The US data comes from official sources, as well as professional surveys by researcher David Finkelhor.

Ben-Arieh, who has been researching and writing about cases of child abuse for many years, said that violence levels in society, especially those related to violence against children, are often connected to poverty and economic worries among other issues.

He said research shows that when parents are stressed about money issues, they typically have less patience and shorter fuses when dealing with their children. Israel?s poverty levels have steadily grown since the onset of the global economic crisis in 2008 and the most recent figures from the National Insurance Institute show that more than 433,000 families lived below the poverty line in 2010. Within that number, some 837,300 children were considered poor; additional data from the Ministry of Welfare and Social Services shows that an estimated 150,000 children are considered at-risk.

Asked whether the reported child abuse cases were mild or severe, Ben-Arieh said that based on the data alone it was extremely hard to determine whether cases being dealt with by social workers involved extreme violence, sexual abuse or negligence by parents.

Since taking over at the institute last last year, Ben-Arieh has focused on raising awareness from the ground up, including providing hands-on training for professionals such as teachers, doctors and educators on how to detect signs of child abuse and how to work with child victims of abuse. Among the programs recently initiated by the institute is a homogenous training program led by community social workers to counsel all members of a family in which abuse has occurred.

The Haruv Institute was founded five years ago by the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation with the goal of becoming a world center for advanced research in the field of child abuse within the family in Israel. The institute works very closely with the Ministries of Welfare and Social Services, Education and Health.

bose wave radio system 3, mp3 player transmitter

Everyone loves listening to music. Do you ever hear your favorite song come on all you want to do is just sing out loud? There?s nothing like enjoying the end of a Sunday afternoon and just listening to some of your favorite music while the sun sets. You?ll want to make sure that your sound system is of the highest quality, like a Bose wave radio system 3.

Bose is known for having superior sound quality. It?s actually quite amazing considering how compact most of the devices are. They can really go in any room and fill it with brilliant sound quality. There are also Bose players that are portable and can be taken outside or inside as you need. I was recently at a house party where we ate outside and our host brought his Bose player to the backyard where we enjoyed the soft music while we ate.

Bose players also feature FM/AM tuners. So if you want to listen to a baseball game while relaxing in your pool you can do it. If you?re looking to upgrade you sound system here are some Bose players to consider:

  • Bose Wave Radio III
  • Bose acoustic wave music
  • Bose Acoustimass 5 III
  • Bose SoundDock Series II

Don?t let your iPod or mp3 player be limited to only being played in your home either. With a mp3 player transmitter you?ll be able to listen to all of your songs in your car. I can?t tell you how many times I?ve found myself browsing from radio station to radio station just looking for something good to listen to. I always end up wishing I could just listen to the music on my iPod. This can all be made possible with the mp3 player transmitter.

Now you can enjoy your music wherever you go. Whether it?s the gym, the beach, a car ride, or in the comfort of your backyard you music can be with you.

You're probably losing $155K from 401(k) plan

By Bob Sullivan

A two-income American family with an average income?that dutifully invests in a 401(k) plan using typical strategies will lose $155,000 ? or about 30 percent of what they should have saved for retirement -- to Wall Street fees, according to a study by an economic justice advocacy organization.?

The Demos study, released last month, is just the latest in a long string of research showing 401(k) plans are a better deal for Wall Street than for you. Many show that people lose about one-third of their retirement money to fees that they don't even know they're paying. The actual lifetime impact of fees is a matter of widespread debate, but it shouldn?t be. In one dramatic example, John Bogle, the inventor of index funds, demonstrated how fees can consume 80 percent of an investor's money through something he?d dubbed ?the tyranny of compounding fees.? (Click on the link to see his proof.)

But some relief may be on the way. Regulations first set in motion in in 2007 (!) will finally kick in next week. Soon, 401(k) statements will include a fact box -- similar to the new info-boxes on credit card bills -- that lists the fee rates (?expense ratios?) associated with fund selections and shows in dollars how much the investor paid.

The disclosure box is a welcome change, but it's probably not going to make much of a difference, laments Robert Hiltonsmith, author of the Demos study.

"It will be underwhelming from a sticker shock point of view. It will not have the effect the doomsayers predict," Hiltonsmith said. The dollar amounts shown will reflect annual amounts, not the real harm from loss of compounding growth, he said.? A 27-year-old with $10,000 invested in a mutual paying a 1 percent expense ratio will pay only about $100 in fees in a year, a number that will hardly inspire shopping around, Hiltonsmith figures.

But that benign-sounding 1 percent annual fee is the source of most 401(k) folly. Compounded, it can result in loss of one-third of retirement savings, or more.

Doing the math to determine real investing costs from fees is tricky. It involves a long series of assumptions on factors so individualized that no 401(k) projection model is easily generalized.? Instead, the Demos study and others like it are merely "for instance ..." examples.

An obfuscator's dream
Wall Street protectors use this to their advantage. The Investment Company Institute, which is critical of the Demos study and others like it, uses its own calculations to claim the average investor pays only $248 annually in 401(k) fees and $20,000 during their lifetime. Even that conservative estimate should be alarming, when the average 401(k) balances is $75,000, according to Fidelity Investments, and those close to retirement (ages 55-64) have an average balance of $100,000.

It doesn?t have to be hard to see how recurring fees devour much of your 401(k) money. Here's a simple, if slightly imprecise, way to think about what happens when someone takes 1 percent of your money every year.? If you had a dollar, and someone took one penny every year for 30 years, you'd only have 70 cents at the end. That's what investing in a 401(k) mutual fund does to your money. These fee losses are obscured by additional contributions you make, and by market ups and downs ? complex 401(k) statements are an obfuscator's dream -- but there's no way around it: Fees are killing most investors' returns.

(If you are a stickler for math, more precise calculations will appear at the bottom of this column. They usually just muddy the conversation, however.)

How does Wall Street get away with this? Obscurity sure helps, but there is another element of human nature that the system was born to exploit and that most people seem incapable of avoiding: Behavioral economists call it "hyperbolic discounting."? In short, Wall Street does a much better job of thinking about both time and money than you do.

Try this experiment, now oft repeated in the behaviorist world: If I offered you $50 today or $100 one year from now, which would you choose?? Most take the $50 and run.? Now, let's do the same exercise with a slight adjustment.? If I offered you $50 five years from now, or $100 six years from now, which would you pick? Almost certainly the $100.? ?But notice: if I asked you the same question in five years, you'd probably take the $50 again.? That?s a funny way to think about money (the technical term is ?dynamic inconsistency?).

The most obvious lesson from hyperbolic discounting is that people's choices are often focused on immediate gratification.? But the other side of that coin, behaviorists tell us, is that people are too quick to discount rewards in the future and, to our point, to discount the impact of future financial pain. In other words, telling someone they might be missing $150,000 from their retirement account 30 years from now means almost nothing to them ? they get angrier about a $35 overdraft fee taken last week from their bank account.? Wall Street's genius is this: By stealing people's money from the future, they avoid consumers' wrath.

Perhaps it's possible to educate all Americans on the tyranny of compounding investment fees; and creating a fact box on consumers' quarterly statements that inspires them to shop around for lower-cost mutual funds is a step in that direction. But behavioral economists say that's highly unlikely to make much of a difference.? Better to create a system that by default enters workers into low-cost, relatively safe investment vehicles and let them pick riskier, more expensive options if they wish, Hiltonsmith says.

?Even if there was more sticker shock, (workers) wouldn?t know what to,? he said. ?The way things are now, we?re asking workers to take on a full-time job, to be financial experts.?

Anyone who thinks the current system is working is doing an awful lot of hyperbolic discounting when it comes to society?s future.? Perhaps the most sobering fact in the Demos study, one that Hiltonsmith downplayed, is that his "perfect" investing couple had only $350,000 in their 401(k) at the end of 40 years. Does anyone think Mr. and Mrs. Perfect can live for 20 years on $350,000?? And these two did everything right -- they invested between 5 percent and 9 percent of their income every year, starting at age 25. They never stopped making contributions -- which nearly everyone does during job changes or tough times -- and they never made a withdrawal, which roughly one-third of investors do. Still, they were left with just $175,000 each at age 65.? Once and for all, that should expose the dirty little secret of 401(k) plans:

The math doesn't work.

Now, onto the math assumptions from above.? For Demos? model, Hiltonsmith created an imaginary couple who worked from 1966-2005. Each earned the median income for their gender during that time (a range from $50,000 to $70,000 total, annually) and socked away a slowly increasing amount of their income during that time, starting at 5 percent and ending at 9 percent. Half their money was invested in a stock fund, half in a bond fund. Average growth and average published stock and bond fund fees from 2010 were applied to their accounts, and average trading costs were also deducted. No employee match was considered in the calculation, given the wide variety of matching programs ? and the fact that many firms suspended matching contributions during the recession. Of course, the couple is a pure abstraction -- there were no 401(k) accounts in the 1960s.? But it takes this kind of modeling to create a hypothetical that covers an investor's entire work life, and their potential lifetime loss from fees.

As for my "one penny" calculation: Taking one penny every year from a dollar is not the same as taking 1 percent, but it's close.? Because the initial dollar amount drops with each deduction, each 1 percent annual hit is slightly less. To wit, 1 percent of 99 cents is less than 1 percent of 100 cents.? Do the math, and you'll find taking one percent of someone's money every year for 30 years is the equivalent of taking 26.03 percent. Still quite a lot of money for nothing.

What should you do with this information? Absent a better idea, put all your 401(k) money in an index fund, which will have fees that are 70 percent to 90 percent lower than standard mutual funds.? And watch your next quarterly statement for those depressing fee boxes. Most employers have two months to comply with the rules that take effect July 1, so you won?t start seeing the fee information until your first statement after Aug. 10.

Combination EGFR inhibitor with Wnt pathway inhibitor could improve durability of lung cancer remission

Many lung cancers are driven by mutations in the epidermal growth-factor receptor (EGFR), and so it makes sense that many successful modern treatments block EGFR activity. Unfortunately, cancers inevitably evolve around EGFR inhibition, and patients with lung cancers eventually relapse. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published today in the journal Cancer Research details a signaling pathway, known as 'the canonical Wnt pathway', that lung cancer cells use to escape from EGFR-targeted therapy and suggests that by disrupting this pathway, we could lengthen the usefulness of existing EGFR inhibition therapies.

"As Billy Crystal as Miracle Max said in The Princess Bride, 'There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead,' and in lung cancer cells, the Wnt pathway could be that difference," says James DeGregori, PhD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center, co-director of the center's Molecular Oncology Program, and the paper's senior author.

Elaborating on DeGregori's very technical description, Matias Cass-Selves, PhD, postdoc in the DeGregori lab and the paper's first author, explains, "The Wnt pathway is an ancient mechanism across species that helps stem cells differentiate into tissue, and maintains stem cells' ability to stay 'stemmy' to produce subsequent generations of cells that can also continue to produce cells. It also maintains adult lung tissue, and now we've shown that it also maintains cancer cells during targeted therapy."

Imagine a dish filled with millions of lung cancer cells. And imagine the cells' genetic material as a shared book. Cass-Selves systematically deleted paragraphs from cells' books to create a population of cells, each with a unique paragraph deleted. Then he treated all the cells with an EGFR inhibitor. Which cells died? Well, a number of paragraphs were responsible for cell death, "But many of the paragraphs missing from the dead cells were within the Wnt chapter," he says.

Break the flow of this Wnt chapter, and you break the ability of cells to withstand EGFR inhibition therapy. EGFR inhibitors currently employed in the clinic include popular drugs like gefitinib, erlotinib and cetuximab. Combining EGFR inhibitors with a hypothetical Wnt inhibitor could make the effects of these useful drugs more durable.

It turns out this Wnt inhibitor may be more than hypothetical.

"Traditionally, the Wnt pathway has been considered to be a hard pathway to drug, since there are not many easily druggable enzymes in it, but we were lucky in that just as we were finding roles for Wnt in lung cancer cell survival, other research teams discovered that a group of enzymes, called tankyrases, are key for the correct functioning of Wnt. Not only that, these groups also designed tankyrase inhibitors which were available for all researchers," Cass-Selves says.

And so instead of what could have been a lengthy search for a drug, the idea of Wnt inhibition combined with EGFR inhibition goes straight into the preclinical pipeline.

Verizon Business Security Blog ? Blog Archive ? 6 Weeks and ...

There were quite a few statistics that jumped out at me in this year?s data breach report, however one of them stuck in my head: 79% of all attacks were classified as ?opportunistic?. We define opportunistic attacks in the report as ?The victim isn?t specifically chosen as a target; they were identified and attacked because they exhibited a weakness the attacker knew how to exploit.? And that got me thinking? If attackers are poking around the Internet and attacking anything that appears weak, that sounds like all of these opportunistic attacks would show up in a honeypot. So I set up a rather simple honeypot with a fake ssh server that records the username and passwords from login attempts. It was attacked almost immediately and the login attempts kept rolling in.

It?s been 6 weeks now and the honeypot has been running most of that time, and I?ve collected 63,303 attempted passwords and usernames through SSH. What makes this list rather interesting is that these are the passwords the attackers are trying ? not the passwords the users are using. There?s an interesting distinction there if we stop and think about it.

The first thing that jumped out at me is that 23.4% of the passwords matched the usernames: bob/bob, alice/alice, root/root kind of thing. I suspect that?s much higher that other network services. If memory serves, adding a user in some *nix flavors (used to?) set the password equal to the username. But rather than go into a top-X list of ?bad? password, I wanted to do some analysis on character sets. Everyone has probably seen the password restrictions being enforced, ?choose a password that contains upper and lower case, numbers and/or special characters? type of thing. So how effective would those be? Can we look at the passwords that attackers are trying to brute-force with and determine which sets would be the best to choose from?charset-venn

The Setup

I started by identifying the four basic character sets:

  • Lower case (a-z)
  • Upper case (A-Z)
  • Numeric (0-9)
  • Special Characters (!@#$, etc)

Then I went through the passwords and identified which specific category they fell into and created (of course) a visualization from that. I chose the trusty Venn diagram to show relative size of each character set and how they relate (any section not labeled is less than 1%).

What?s this tell us?

First take a look at the size of the circles, a whopping 86.7% of the attempted passwords include lower case. Perhaps then, a good strategy (in avoiding brute-force attempts) is to use a password that excludes lower case characters. But take a look at the circle for upper case characters; it?s the smallest of all of them (who would?ve thought that?!)

For example, the #2 ranked ?password? appears 1,125 times in the list, while ?Password? appears 6 times and ?PASSWORD? appears once, (incidentally, ?Password1? appears 50 times).

But let?s take a look at the ?best? character sets. Which character sets had the least amount of attempts against them? The best combination appears to be the union of upper case and special characters with only 78 total password attempts (out of 63,000) from there followed by just upper case passwords coming in with 105 password attempts? ?PASSWORD!? never made it on this list.

Some Caveats

As I mentioned in the beginning, these are attempts against the SSH service. We can only safely assume that this analysis applies to SSH logins and we should probably limit our lessons to that. The dictionaries and tactics used against an open RDP server (for example) may be completely different and they may again be completely different when we talk about attacks against a social networking site or tactics used in cracking a list of passwords offline.

The final caveat I?d like to make is that this is all meaningless against something like key loggers (which were used in 41% of the breaches we studied in 2011), and that the use of stolen credentials appears to be a problem for large and small orgs (link). In other words, pursuing ?strong? passwords may be much less of a problem than keeping the passwords out of the hands of the attacker at all and we have to keep all of that in perspective.

Finally, I hope to post the data used in this analysis ?real soon now?.? Once that happens, I?ll end this post and include a link.

BlackBerry 10 Delayed Until 2013 - Business Insider

blackberry 10 developer preview

YouTube

?

RIM announced that its next mobile operating system, BlackBerry 10, won't launch until 2013.

The company showed off BlackBerry 10 at its developers conference in May and claimed the new platform will be what finally puts the company back on track.

BlackBerry 10 was originally supposed to debut by the end of this year. RIM was supposed to launch new phones designed specifically for the new operating system. The PlayBook tablet was also supposed to get an upgrade.

This does not look good for RIM. As the company sheds jobs and loses more marketshare to competitors like Apple and Google, it's becoming more and more clear that the company could be sold before BlackBerry 10 ever sees the light of day.

What does that mean for you? If you already own a BlackBerry phone, probably nothing. Current BlackBerrys weren't going to get the upgrade to BlackBerry 10 anyway. But if you own a PlayBook, it looks like you're going to be stuck with the current OS for some time.

Church replaces tornado-damaged stained glass windows

Rick South and Tony Casas of Berg Studios install stained glass windows at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Tuscaloosa on Tuesday. Berg Studios, based in Lubbock, Texas, is replacing the windows at the church using 90 percent of the glass recovered from the original windows, which were blown out during the April 27, 2011, tornado. A church member's photos were used to recreate the layout.

TUSCALOOSA | The EF4 tornado that swept through Tuscaloosa on April 27, 2011, caused damage to many churches in the city.

Covenant Presbyterian Church on Hargrove Road was not spared. The damage the tornado caused has been more difficult to repair than expected.

The church's sanctuary sustained heavy damage that was easily fixable. What has been difficult to repair is the half a million dollars in damage to the church's pipe organ and stained glass windows.

Susan Benke, co-chair of Covenant's building and grounds committee, said the church has to fly in experts from Canada to fix the gigantic pipe organ because few people have the expertise.

Rush Watson, also co-chair of the buildings and grounds committee for the church, said repairing the church's stained glass windows also takes a specialized hand. The stained glass windows were made of faceted glass 1-inch thick that is difficult to procure, he said. The design of the church's stained glass, more than 50 years old, was also unique and hard to replicate.

After interviewing four different companies, church officials found a company in Lubbock, Texas, that could do the job.

?A mission group in Texas told us that Berg Studios could do all kinds of stained glass work,? Benke said. ?We wanted someone closer by, so we tried local companies, but found out that they didn't have the experience or the expertise doing faceted stained glass.

?So we called Berg, flew them in for a talk and found out that they had the experience and the skills,? she said.

Berg started installing faceted stained glass windows in the church on June 23.

Amy Weh, co-owner of Berg Studios, said installing the stained glass windows has been challenging for several reasons.

?On a scale of 1 to 10, the difficulty of this job is about an eight,? Weh said.

Some of the more than 20 colors used in the church's original windows can't be duplicated because they don't exist anymore, Weh said, such as a tan streaked with red.

Constructing new windows to resemble the originals has been like putting together a huge jigsaw puzzle.

?I only had a picture to go off of,? Weh said. ?There's about 20 different colors in this design and each piece varies in size.

?I had to take the photos of the old stained glass windows and scale them up. I drew the original stained glass windows on graph paper and had to number each piece and the color of it. Then I laid out all the pieces like a giant puzzle.?

Weh was also asked to use pieces of the broken stained glass in the new windows.

?The church members took great care to collect the broken glass and Berg worked with us to re-use it,? Watson said. ?There's an emotional, sentimental element about using the same glass.?

Weh said about 90 percent of the new windows are made of glass recycled from the old windows.

?Recycling it actually saved them a lot of money,? she said.

Watson didn't give the exact cost of the project, but said that insurance and donations covered the cost.

The new windows are expected to be completed by Saturday.

Benke said she's very pleased with the project so far.

?It looks fabulous,? she said. ?It looks wonderful. The technique they use to do it today is better than it used to be.?

Watson said more light is filtered through the new stained glass windows than the old. He said the church will begin worshipping in the new sanctuary in August.

Kourtney Kardashian on Water Birth: EWWWWW!

Kourtney Kardashian will welcome a daughter into the world any day now, but this just in: the reality star will NOT be participating in a natural water birth.

TMZ sources that Kardashian was considering this option because it's reportedly a more peaceful process for the child… but Kourtney then witnessed the event in action a couple days ago and reacted to it in disgust.

Kourtney Kardashian Red Carpet Pic

Kourtney allegedly told pals the entire thing was "horrific" and, without drugs administered to mother, "looked brutally painful," although we have to ask: Doesn't that description apply to dating Scott Disick as well?

In the end, Kardashian will simply go the route of Beyonce and Jessica Simpson and rent out a suite at a hospital, Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles to be exact. No word yet on how much she'll charge for the right to the first photos, but rest assured: it will be a lot.

Daily Kos: Why are teachers afraid to use their 'teacher' voice?

On his Education Rethink blog John Spencer asks some important questions about why there wasn't more push back from educators at #ISTE12 (International Society for Technology Education). His questions and commentary are specific to one speech, one conference, one group. ?But I find that his questions about 'teacher voice' are part of a larger issue in education.

Find the full piece here, What Didn't Happen at #ISTE12

Why are educators afraid to use their 'teacher' voice? Teachers have always been on the forefront of advocating for their kids, their classrooms, and their rights. ?What has changed?

Spencer thought for sure that the ISTE crowd would react negatively to a video by Arne Duncan. ?Afterall, he has championed many of the policies that have stripped teachers of their 'voice.' Duncan's video was sure to promote a reaction from this highly motivated group of education leaders. Where were the boos, the tweets, the outrage?

Where is the teacher voice?

Where is the voice of democratic education? ?Why do I keep hearing "digital citizenship" defined through the notion of ?"don't put up stuff that will piss off employers" rather than "use these tools to advocate for social change?" Want transformation? How about members of the Arab Spring who used social media to topple dictatorships?

His commentary continues:
We Stayed Silent
Then it hits me. We let it die. The teachers politely and silently sat on their heads when Arne Duncan spoke. The professional organizations that we are a part of have nodded politely to merit pay arguments while our unions who should work like pit bulls to save public education have contributed to a president who applauded the mass firing of a teacher and remained silent when the LA Times published value-added scores. Even "progressive" organizations are pushing for policies that demonize teachers and strip away local civic institutions.
Why is it that they stayed silent?

Perhaps Nancy Flanagan's piece last week can help us answer that question?

Are Compliant Teachers Exhibiting Stockholm Syndrome?

Nancy shared a piece by an Indiana teacher who goes by the name "Horace Mann" on twitter and other social media outlets.

Here's her introduction:
"Horace" suggested that both male and female teachers were subject to a kind of Stockholm Syndrome, eager to please their bosses and maintain personal safety. I invited Horace to expand on that thinking. Here's his take on women, teachers, compliance and self-preservation.

Could it be the same reason why John Spencer's peers stayed silent at ISTE?

In reference to Stanley Milgram's studies, "Horace" states:

Obedience may have prevailed not because idealistically, mutually cooperative societies succeeded, but because submission was necessary to preserve the self.
Perhaps we are witnessing a collective Stockholm Syndrome as some teachers unwittingly defend those institutions that are destroying public education.
Indeed, the fact that teachers readily put their heads down, close their doors, and block out the constant barrage of negative media attention is a lesson on its own merit. ?But further, is our reluctance to speak out a reaction to the "status quo" dialogue that has been thrown at the profession?

"Horace" concludes:

No outside rescue force is coming to save public schools.

Teachers and parents need to comprehend that they know better about what works for children than legislators who see children as nothing more than test scores to manipulate and private corporations which see students as nothing more than dollars. They must demand that edu-crats making unwise decisions adversely affecting students see the damages first hand.

Is it "status quo" to speak out against dangerous policies?

A better question was posed by Kevin Welner, How Many Decades Before 'Reform' Becomes 'Status Quo'?

When approaches have been tried unsuccessfully over a couple of decades with less-than-stellar outcomes, we might expect the next policy, or at the very least the next ?change,? to lean in a new direction. But the seemingly permanent wave of test-based accountability, privatization, and choice has managed to soar past its silver anniversary almost entirely unscathed by the depredations of time and evidence.
Is it "status quo" to speak out against dangerous policies? When will today's "reform" become the "status quo"? ?When will people stand up and call for courageous changes to our schools?

Welner continues:

Until then, we will apprehensively await the next reform policymaker?s fevered announcement of the next groundbreaking, yet eerily familiar, policy that attaches A-to-F grades to schools; or lifts caps on the number of charter schools; or looks to private-sector business ideas and infuses our schools with competition; or evaluates districts, schools, teachers, or students based on standardized tests.
Why is it that teachers stayed silent?

Why is it that teachers are afraid to use their 'teacher' voice to call out shoddy research, unproven approaches, and corporate welfare driven reforms?

Diane Ravitch offered this, ?Do This Or We Will Punish You?in a recent piece on her blog.

Ravitch shares a letter from a reader who responded to another piece about the pressure to pass students for fear of being fired in a turnaround school. ?A practice that Duncan himself has called out.

Her reader's comments fit nicely into the debate about why teachers are afraid to speak out.

Instead of focusing on reform efforts that eliminate the outdated structures in K-12 education, including the mountains of useless federal and state regulations that perpetuate a dead system, we?re too focused on taking people to the dungeon and torturing them into improvement or else. ?What, you failed 5th grade? On the rack with you! The pain will continue until you start learning!?

We are truly a sick people.

Have teachers become complacent? ?How can we get teachers to rally against the current wave of "reforms" threatening our schools?

How do we get teachers to use their 'teacher' voice and speak out?

Professional Therapy Associates Case Study Demonstrates ...

Professional Therapy Associates has reported the results of a new case study that demonstrates how physical therapy treatment can provide relief from chronic pain, and allow patients to return to normal work and functional activities. Physical therapists at the Flathead Valley physical therapy clinic documented the diagnosis, treatment plan and subsequent results for a patient suffering from chronic pain.

Chronic pain is often described as pain that lasts longer than six months. It can result from trauma, injury, surgery or an ongoing medical condition. Chronic pain may range from mild to acute; severe chronic pain can be incapacitating to sufferers. According to a review from the Institute of Medicine, the medical branch of the National Academy of Sciences, chronic pain afflicts approximately 100 million Americans, with an estimated annual national cost ranging from $560-635 billion.*

Blaine Stimac, owner and CEO of Professional Therapy Associates, noted that the practice?s recent case study shows how physical therapy can provide numerous benefits to patients suffering with chronic pain. The case study subject is a 49-year-old female who suffered neck pain as well as mid- and low-back pain following an injury that occurred when she was exiting a car. Her MRI revealed a bulging disc between two vertebrae in her spine. A bulging disc can press on nerves, causing pain, numbness and impaired movement. This patient was unable to stand, bend or walk without pain. In addition, severe pain prevented her from exercising, including using an elliptical training machine, for more than four minutes.

At Professional Therapy Associates, a physical therapist first examined the patient to determine the cause of her pain and any other existing conditions that may have predisposed her to this injury, and found that one leg was shorter than the other and her pelvis and low back was out of alignment. As a result, the patient experienced severe pain with all activities, including bending. To address these issues, the physical therapist devised an individualized physical therapy treatment plan. A heel lift corrected her leg length discrepancy, while manual therapy and therapeutic exercises improved motion in the joints and muscles surrounding the troubled area. In addition, strengthening exercises helped to stabilize the patient?s spine, while education on proper body mechanics helped to improve her ability to perform daily activities, such as walking, bending, standing up from a seated position and working at a desk.

After 16 physical therapy sessions, the patient was able to perform all work and functional activities without pain. She was also able to resume a 45-minute exercise routine three times each week, including using an elliptical trainer, pain-free. Upon completion of her treatment, she remarked, ?When I came [to Professional Therapy Associates], I was afraid to bend in any direction other than straight forward. Now I can bend sideways, backwards and pretty much any direction I choose with virtually no pain.?

?There?s no need for millions of Americans to endure chronic pain when physical therapy can effectively treat a wide range of conditions,? said Stimac. ?Whether a patient is suffering from headaches, joint pain, backaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, or general muscle or nerve pain, our therapists can help minimize or eliminate their pain. Physical therapy provides non-invasive, long-term relief, because it focuses on identifying and correcting the causes of pain, not just covering up the symptoms.?

Physical therapists help patients with chronic pain by setting up individual plans of care that may include stretching and conditioning exercises to increase range of motion, manual therapy, flexibility and muscle strength, as well as passive forms of therapy such as application of heat and cold. Stimac asserts that his team of Montana-licensed physical therapists has achieved measurable results with patients suffering pain from osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, sports- and work-related injuries, and automobile accidents, among other causes. ?Our focus is on returning patients to their normal, everyday activities as quickly as possible, and to helping them achieve their health and fitness goals through personalized physical therapy treatment plans,? he said.

As a service to Flathead Valley residents, Professional Therapy Associates is offering free health and injury screenings to anyone suffering from chronic or acute pain, muscle weakness, joint stiffness or other complaints. A licensed physical therapist will perform a brief musculoskeletal screen and answer questions about injuries, symptoms and physical therapy treatment. Individuals interested in scheduling a free health and injury screening, a $100 value, may register online at http://www.ptflathead.com/free-consultation.
