Actor Jackie Cooper died Tuesday at a Beverly Hills hospital after a brief illness; he was 88.

In 1931, when he was just nine years old, Cooper became the first child actor to be nominated in the Best Actor category at the Academy Awards for his role in Skippy.

His career continued to flourish, as Cooper won Emmy awards for his work on M*A*S*H and The White Shadow. The actor also played the newspaper editor of The Daily Planet in 1978's Superman.

In addition to his acting career -- which included stints on Murder, She Wrote and St. Elsewhere -- Cooper was also a decorated WWII veteran who served with the Navy in the South Pacific. Cooper's autobiography, Please Don't Shoot My Dog, was published in 1982.

Cooper has been married three times: to June Horne (1944-1949, with whom he had one son, John "Jack" Cooper III), Hildy Parks (1950-51) and Barbara Kraus (until her death in 2009). He and Kraus had three children together: Russell (born in 1956), Julie (1957-1997) and Cristina (1959-2009).
