After The Rapture, Who Will Walk Your Dog?

Around sunset today, May 21, the Rapture is scheduled to begin ? at least according to a Christian evangelist named Harold Camping and his followers. When the moment arrives, they say, believers will go to heaven and nonbelievers will endure five months of hell on Earth.
But there's a crucial question for those who are saved: Who'll take care of their loyal pets?
Well, Bart Centre says he'll be there. For $135 (plus $20 for each additional critter; PayPal accepted), he promises to look after your dog or cat or hamster or even llama once you are spirited away to heaven.
Centre started his company, Eternal Earth-Bound Pets, two years ago. But business didn't really boom until Harold Camping set the date of the Rapture at May 21, 2011.
"We increased our rates in January, and since that time for the first quarter of this year we're 27 percent up over the first quarter of 2010," Centre tells Guy Raz, host of weekends on All Things Considered.
Right now Eternal Earth-Bound Pets has contracts with 259 clients ? that means roughly $35,000 in contracts ? and is set to rescue dogs, cats, a cockatoo and even a horse in Montana in the event of the Rapture.
Centre assures potential clients that his staff will still be on Earth after doomsday by testing employees to confirm that they are Atheists. How does he do that? Well, he just asks them to commit blasphemy.
"They are all very willing to do that. And that confirms that even in the absurdly remote chance that we are wrong and the believers are right, our rescuers are going nowhere."
Potential clients often ask Centre how they can be sure his company will follow through with that promise to take care of their animals in a post-Rapture world.
"What we try to do is reassure our clients that they can trust us, number one," he says. And if that isn't good enough, Centre suggests clients "find a friend who may be a Jew, a Hindu, a Muslim, an Atheist, a Wiccan, a Catholic, an Episcopal, anyone they think is not going to be Raptured and appoint them as their post-Rapture power of attorney."
And if the Rapture doesn't come? Those clients are out of luck, Centre says: There's no money-back guarantee.

Google Deodorizes Sniffable Android Security Flaw
A new round of patching has begun for Android phones, the vast majority of which were found to be vulnerable to hackers if the owner was using it on an open WiFi network. The flaw affected 99.7 percent of all Android smartphones running Android 2.3.3 and earlier versions because they don't use a secure HTTPS connection, according to researchers.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has begun rolling out a patch to fix a security flaw in versions 2.3.3 and earlier of its Android mobile operating system.
That flaw affects all Google services using the ClientLogin authentication protocol.
It lets hackers access any personal data available through Android's application programming interfaces (APIs).
"The flaw is now fixed for all versions of Android worldwide," Google spokesperson Randall Sarafa told LinuxInsider.
The patch is being rolled out in stages over several days, Sarafa said.
The Hole in Android
The flaw gained media attention after it was publicized by the University of Ulm.
Here's how it works: When an application wants to get access to Android's APIs, it requests an authentication token through ClientLogin by providing an account name and password.
The system then returns an authorization token, which is good for up to two weeks.
If the token is used in requests sent over unencrypted networks, such as WiFi networks, hackers can steal it. They can then use the token to access any personal data made available through the service API.
The hackers will gain full access to the victim's calendar, contacts information, or private Web-based photo albums. They'll be able to view, delete, or modify any calendar events, contacts, or private pictures, the Ulm University researchers said.
The flaw affected 99.7 percent of all Android smartphones running Android 2.3.3 and earlier versions because they don't use a secure HTTPS connection, the researchers said.
Google's patch forces an HTTPS connection for calendar and contacts sync on Android, Sarafa said.
More on the Flaw
Authentication tokens are widely used for online services such as eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY). They are also used by software and application vendors such as Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Splunk, and in Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS mobile operating system.
There was a problem with the authentication token on Android because Google's implementation was faulty, Paul Laudanski, director of ESET's cyber threat analysis center, told LinuxInsider.
"The entry point is having an unpatched or vulnerable Android system connecting to Google services using ClientAuth over an unencrypted public WiFi network," Laudanski explained. "The correct implementation is to transmit the authorization token in a secured manner."
Google services transmit the authorization token as an open text message, which can be easily stolen.
If the technology is implemented correctly and the authorization tokens are sent securely, then even if an unencrypted WiFi network is used, the user information would appear as garbage to snoopers, Laudanski pointed out.
Google's implementation of the technology may not have been faulty in and of itself, argues Mike Paquette, chief strategy officer at Top Layer Security.
"The problem appears to be the use of the ClientLogin protocol, allowing these sniffable authentication protocols, combined with a long expiry time," Paquette told LinuxInsider. "This makes exploits practical and even likely," he added.
Android smartphone owners should stay away from heavily used public WiFi hotspots, Paquette warned. "It's likely that attackers would target areas with large numbers of users of public WiFi in order to have the greatest return," he explained.
Old Problems Refreshed
The security flaw in Android was apparently first discovered by Dan Wallach of Princeton University, who blogged about it in February.
In an experiment during his undergraduate security class, he set up a sniffer with fellow students to listen in on his Android smartphone. They used Wireshark and Mallory.
Wireshark is a network protocol analyzer for Unix and Windows. Mallory is a transparent TCP and UDP proxy. It can be used to access network streams and assess mobile Web applications, among other things.
UDP, the User Datagram Protocol, is one of the core members of the Internet Protocol (IP) Suite. It lets applications directly send messages, or datagrams, to other hosts on an IP network.
The team found that Google doesn't encrypt traffic to Google Calendar, although it properly encrypts traffic to Gmail and Google Voice. Eavesdroppers could see victims' calendar transactions and likely impersonate them on Google Calendar, Wallach found.
The University of Ulm researchers built on Wallach's research.
Android smartphone users should apply the same security precautions to their devices as they would do with their laptops, Torsten George, vice president of marketing 
at Agiliance, told LinuxInsider.
"Smartphones are essentially taking on the role of a regular computer," George pointed out. "Thus, they are just as vulnerable to attack by cybercriminals as regular laptop or desktop computers."
Because they lack built-in security, smartphones "open up a bigger attack surface than traditional computer devices," George added.

Lone Wanderers: No Warmth of the Sun for Some Planets
Researchers say they've found evidence of planets wandering the galaxy unaccompanied by a star. While it's possible some could actually be orbiting stars at a very far distance, astronomers think others may have been ejected from their home systems. Researchers say the discovery could change the way they imagine the origins of planetary systems.
Roaming planets, untied to a solar system or stellar orbit, were recently found by a team of astronomers, according to a report in Nature.

The team of researchers led by David Bennett from Notre Dame University and Takahiro Sumi of Osaka University used gravitational microlensing observing programs to spot the planets.
The original goal was to look for unknown masses in the galaxy's composition that they believed could be brown dwarfs or other material, Bennett, who has been working on some of the observations since 1990, told TechNewsWorld.
As the investigations continued and became more advanced, however, they began to entertain the idea that the masses they found were in fact planets about the size of Jupiter.
The Rambling Planets
Unlike the planets we recognize in our solar system like Mars or Venus, which orbit around our sun, these planets seem to be unattached to a stellar path.
"The observations suggest that close planet interactions scatter planets out of their systems. It could be that some of these planets are very far out in their planetary systems, but the indication is that probably most of them are not bound to a star," said Bennett. It could be that there are more planets in the solar system that were also ejected, he added.
Floating throughout the Milky Way Galaxy, these planets -- researchers identified about 10 of them -- were probably formed when they were "ejected" from different planetary systems following a violent spatial encounter.
The idea of planets kicked out of their solar systems isn't new. In fact, in our own system, the Nice model -- a possible scenario for our planetary formation -- suggests that Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune did some rearranging and migrating of their own during their evolutionary stages. But this is the first time observations and scientific data can back up the idea of these lonely planets.
Changing Perspective
Researchers agree the discovery could change the way they imagine the origins of solar systems.
"In general, this discovery will change the idea of how the planetary system forms," Sumi told TechNewsWorld.
In the past, the idea of planetary formation was based off what scientists learned about our planet's formations and its orbit around the sun. With the new data, however, researchers can begin to wonder if "ejected" planets are more abundant in space than previously thought.
"This changes our whole perspective of how planets relate to the population of other solar systems out there. Solar systems like Earth are maybe the exception rather than the rule," said Mike Malaska, solar system ambassador for NASA/JPL.
The Search Continues
Follow-up investigations such as NASA's WFIRST are currently being planned to gather more information on galaxy formation. Additional projects are even undergoing right now, like the Kepler Spacecraft, which its website calls a "Search for Habitable Planets."
Another craft, the European Space Agency's COROT, is also in orbit searching for planets outside Earth's solar system.
Researchers and space enthusiasts are excited about the endless possibilities this discovery could lead to.
"Up until now we used to think we had a pretty normal solar system," Malaska told TechNewsWorld. "Then we start looking at everything and a discovery like this and think, wow, there's a lot out there, now there's endless possibilities about other solar systems out there."

Cell phone cancer. Cellular (cell) phones first became widely available in the United States in the 1990s, but their use has increased dramatically since then. According to the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association, there were an estimated 270 million cell phone subscribers in the United States as of December 2008, representing about 87% of the total population.Based on the large and still growing number of cell phone users (both adults and children), and the fact that cell phones give off radio-frequency (RF) waves, some concerns have been raised about the safety of cell phone use. With respect to cancer, concern focuses on whether cell phones might increase the risk of brain tumors or other tumors in the head and neck area.
How do cell phones work?
Cell phones communicate with nearby cell towers through RF waves, a form of energy located on the electromagnetic spectrum between FM radio waves and microwaves. Like FM radio waves, microwaves, visible light, and heat, they are a form of non-ionizing radiation. They cannot cause cancer by directly damaging DNA. RF waves are different from stronger types of radiation such as x-rays, gamma rays, and ultraviolet (UV) light, which can break the chemical bonds in DNA.
At very high levels, RF waves can heat up body tissues. (This is the basis for how microwave ovens work.) But the levels of energy given off by cell phones are much lower, and the warmth from a cell phone does not damage body tissues.
How are people exposed?
The RF waves from cell phones come from the antenna, which is part of the body of a hand-held phone. The waves are strongest at the antenna and lose energy as they travel away from the phone. The phone is typically held against the side of the head when in use. The closer the antenna is to the head, the greater a person's expected exposure to RF energy.
Many factors can affect the amount of RF energy to which a person is exposed, including:
* The amount of time the person is on the phone
* The model of phone being used: different phones give off different amounts of energy
* Whether or not the person is using a hands-free device
* The distance and path to the nearest cell phone tower: being farther away from the tower requires more energy to get a good signal, as does being inside a building
* The amount of cell phone traffic in the area at the time
Other factors may also affect exposure. For example, older cell phones (analog models) used more energy than newer, digital phones.
The amount of RF energy absorbed from the phone into the user's local tissues is known as the specific absorption rate (SAR). Different cell phones have different SAR levels. Cell phone makers are required to report the SAR level of their product to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This information is sometimes listed inside the battery compartment on the phone. The upper limit of SAR allowed in the United States is 1.6 watts per kilogram (W/kg) of body weight.

Using technical analysis as a way to decide when to buy a stock, or ETF, or mutual fund can allow you to change the parameters or rules for when a new buy is suggested. The same analysis with some software programs will tell you when to sell a position based on rules you define or that the program suggests.
There are anywhere from two or three to perhaps as many as ten different buy sell rules you can adjust which will allow you to control the frequency of trading. In this way if you only want to look at the market once a week or every few weeks you can do this and still enjoy substantial profits.
The key factors or rules you can control can also be back tested or optimized by some software programs to give you the best results with the groups of symbols that interest you.
Here are the key factors that you can control:
? Analysis period - when analyzing momentum you can set the period of analysis (on a continual basis) for anywhere from 5 trading days upward. A shorter period of return will react more quickly to market volatility and result in frequent trades whereas if the period of analysis is long, like 90 trading days there will be fewer trades.
? Stops - trailing stops that give a sell signal when a ticker symbol drops from its high can also affect the frequency of trades. If the stop is set at 3% there will be substantially more trades than if it is set, for example, at 8%.
? Hold time - some software programs will allow you to specify desired hold times and while they may be over-ridden by stops or other selling rules, a longer hold time will also reduce the number of trades. For example if you have no hold time then trade signals can occur any time but if you have hold time signals of 30 or 90 days there will be fewer trades unless a stop signal is generated. This is also important if you are investing in mutual funds as it helps to avoid short-term trading fees.
? Chart settings - how you set the parameters for different charts can equally effective a charts signal to buy or sell. For example, a moving average chart with settings of 10 fast and 50 slow is going to produce more signals than a chart of 20 and 60 or a chart of 50 and 150.
These are but four ways you can control the frequency of trading in your investment portfolio and thus control the amount of time you spend managing your investments. It may be true that gains will not be as robust if you trade very infrequently but that doesn't mean your account will not grow, it just may not grow as much as someone who looks at their investments daily instead of once a week.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture is to take delivery of a fleet of 125 tractors as part of a national programme to support the development of small farm agriculture.
The ?New Holland TD80? straddle mount tractors would be delivered to the government at a ceremony to be held at the premises of the Agricultural Engineering Services Directory of Ghana?s Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), according to a statement issued in Accra on Tuesday.
Sirius Corporation, a world leading trading company, was tasked by the Government of Japan with sourcing the equipment for this donation as part of an international aid project.
The statement said CFAO Equipment, New Holland?s official distributor in Ghana, would provide technical and service support for these units.
The statement said the TD80 tractors, built at New Holland?s Turkish plant in Ankara, were destined to support the development of small farming agriculture as part of MOFA?s mission to promote sustainable agriculture through research and technology development as well as other essential support services to farmers.
?This includes the creation of District Mechanization Centres and supply of machinery and implements to support the introduction of mechanized agriculture into the country?s farming practices.?
Diego H. de la Calle, New Holland Agriculture?s Africa Business Director, expressed satisfaction with the positive outcome of the international tender.
The statement said the 80 hp New Holland TD80 straddle mounted tractors were built with heavy-duty components.
?They are engineered to be a powerful and faithful working partner with a long operating life and high uptime in the toughest conditions.?
It said CFAO Equipment, in addition to supporting the units, will deliver technical and operator training to ensure that the farmers who would receive these tractors could make the most of their equipment, fulfilling the objectives of MOFA?s development program.

SWITZERLAND: A proposed Global Framework for Climate Services designed to help countries ? especially the most vulnerable ? cope with climate variability and climate change is one of the priorities which will be discussed at the Sixteenth World Meteorological Congress in Geneva tomorrow, Monday. Other key discussion items include: strengthening the WMO?s disaster risk reduction program in the context of increased likelihood and impact of extreme weather, climate and water-related hazards and events in a warming world with a growing population; and reinforcing the aeronautical meteorology programme in view of its importance to air traffic and the need for quality assurance of these services.
IRELAND: National Dawn Chorus Day, BirdWatch Ireland?s most popular annual event, took place in venues across the country. Wildlife enthusiasts set their alarm clocks a little earlier than usual to go out to enjoy a morning of beautiful birdsong. BirdWatch Ireland branches throughout the country hosted a range of dawn chorus walks and other birdsong-themed events.
CANADA: Newfoundland?s once prosperous sealing industry is facing another disastrous season due to low ice levels, the high price of fuel and the low price for furs.? Fewer than 50 have taken part in seal hunts this year compared to the normal 200-300.?? As of May 10, about 38,000 seals had been landed of the 450,000 quota.
MARINE RESEARCH: Scientists have discovered that marine diatoms, tiny phytoplankton abundant in the sea, have an animal-like urea cycle, and that this cycle enables the diatoms to efficiently use carbon and nitrogen from their environment. The researchers, from the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) and other institutions, published their findings in this week?s issue of the journal Nature. The team, led by lead author Andrew Allen from JCVI and co-author Chris Bowler, Institute of Biology, Ecole Normale Sup?rieure, Paris, believes that the cycle could be a reason for the domination of diatoms in marine environments, especially after upwelling events?the upward movement of nutrient rich waters from the deep ocean to the surface. In response to ocean upwelling, diatoms are able to quickly recover from prolonged periods of nutrient deprivation and rapidly proliferate.
