SEAL who wrote bin Laden raid book makes first TV appearance

The former Navy SEAL who wrote about his part in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden was interviewed on "60 Minutes." The CBS news program disguised his face and altered his voice to protect his identity.

"He calls himself Mark Owen. That's not his real name. We've disguised him and will keep his name confidential for his own safety," begins the "60 Minutes" piece.

CBS used a professional makeup artist to render his true appearance unrecognizable, The Atlantic reported.

Mark Owen is the pen name of the author of? "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama bin Laden," a book that is getting some attention as it claims to offer a firsthand account of the raid on the al-Qaida chief's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. There are also reports that the book contradicts parts of the official version of events.

Owen, a former member of SEAL Team 6, was the second man in the room when bin Laden was shot and took photos of bin Laden's body that were never released, CBS notes.

Among the things Owen revealed to CBS' Scott Pelley:

  • There was a full-size model of the bin Laden complex, where he and the other members of the elite tactical team trained.
  • There was a dress rehearsal of the raid for military top brass, including Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and Adm. Eric Olson, head of Special Operations Command.
  • The team had a week off at Virginia Beach, Va., then trained one more time at the full-size model before heading off on their mission.
  • The book is not meant to be political. "You know, if these crazies on either side of the aisle want to make it political, shame on them," Owen said. "This is a book about Sept. 11th, and it needs to rest on Sept. 11th, not be brought into the political arena, because this ... this has nothing to do with politics."

While CBS chose not to identify the SEAL Team 6 member, some other media outlets have revealed his real name. CBS was clear in its online version of the story: "When word of the book was announced last week, a few news organizations discovered Mark Owen's real name and published it. As a result, he's a marked man?in hiding?probably for the rest of his life. We will not reveal his true name."

The interview will air on "60 Minutes"? on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. ET

chairman of the joint chiefs, Admiral Mike Mullen, and Admiral Eric Olsen, head of Special Operations Command.

Fiesta is Ford's smallest US car

The Ford Fiesta is a versatile, budget-conscious small car with a stylish interior and upscale car options such as heated leather seats and voice-recognition controls. The Fiesta also has higher U.S. government fuel economy ratings than does a gasoline-powered Honda Fit.

Best of all, the 2013 Fiesta earned five out of five stars in side crash testing by the U.S. government. It's one of the few subcompacts with such a high score in side crash testing.

Available as a five-door hatchback and a sedan, the Fiesta features the lowest starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, of any new-model Ford: $13,995 for a base S sedan with five-speed manual transmission and $15,090 for a sedan with automatic. A base, 2013 Fiesta S hatchback with manual starts at $14,995. A Fiesta S hatchback with automatic, however, jumps in price, to $16,090.

All 2013 Fiestas have the same, 120-horsepower, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder, gasoline engine, though the Fiesta is sold in other some countries with diesel engines and turbocharged power.

In the United States, the Fiesta has a large number of small-car competitors.

As an example, the starting Fiesta hatchback retail prices are $1,120 and $825 less, respectively, than those for the 2013 Honda Fit with 117-horsepowr, naturally aspirated four-cylinder and manual and automatic transmissions. But the 2013 Kia Rio five-door hatchback with 138-horsepower, naturally aspirated four cylinder has starting MSRPs, including destination charge, that are lower than the Fiesta's ? $14,550 with manual transmission and $15,650 with automatic.

Meantime, the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic starts at $14,660 as a sedan with manual transmission and $15,730 as a sedan with automatic. As a hatchback, the 2012 Sonic has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $15,560 with manual transmission and $16,630 with automatic. Sonics are available with 138-horsepower, naturally aspirated four cylinder and 138-horsepower, turbocharged four cylinder. The turbo four has higher peak torque and it comes on at a lower rpm.

Not much has changed for the U.S. Fiesta for the 2013 model year, though standard equipment and equipment packages are re-aligned.

The test Fiesta SE hatchback looked good in its bright red paint with painted aluminum wheels.

Fiestas have prominent indentations in their side bodies to add interest. Added-on trim pieces of silver or black are nonexistent, thus conveying a "clean" car that slices through the air. Front styling has a swanky European look ? not exactly brawny and not exactly cute. Some buyers may prefer a different appearance, and Ford offers body stripes and different grille inserts as options.

The test Fiesta five-door moved along in traffic and merged well, though the car didn't have super sporty acceleration.

Gear shifts were noticeable at times. The transmission was the six-speed PowerShift automatic that's Ford's dual-clutch, semi-automatic mechanism. It was the subject of complaints from consumers last year, but Ford said it has installed new electronic programming to better manage the workings of the transmission.

Torque in the Fiesta's 1.6-liter, double overhead cam, Duratech four cylinder peaks at 112 foot-pounds at a relatively high 5,000 rpm. In comparison, the Sonic's 1.8-liter, turbocharged four cylinder delivers 148 foot-pounds of torque at 2,500 rpm.

Still, the test Fiesta easily averaged 29 miles per gallon in combined city and highway travel, for a total range of nearly 360 miles on a single tank of gas. This mileage is a bit lower than the combined 33-mpg rating given to this Fiesta model by the U.S. government, which estimates city mileage at 29 mpg and highway mileage at 39 mpg. A Fiesta with extra-charge fuel efficiency package is rated at 40 mpg on the highway.

The Honda Fit, in contrast, is rated at 27/33 mpg with automatic transmission and has no extra fuel efficiency package.

The interior of the Fiesta test car had a snappy-looking dashboard arranged with a nice array of controls and features that dispelled any thought that this was a Spartan, cheap vehicle.

In fact, the sticker price was barely over $19,000, but the test Fiesta drove with surprising competency and nimbleness.

The car absorbed a good number of road bumps without fuss, and while passengers felt vibrations from the road, they weren't overly intrusive. The driver, meantime, had a good feel for the road in the Fiesta SE hatchback, and found the car tracked accurately in curves.

Front suspension is independent MacPherson strut, while a twisted beam and coil springs handle the rear.

Rack-and-pinion steering was more precise than expected and added to the driver's confidence.

With conservatively sized, 15-inch wheels and tires, the test Fiesta had no feeling of unsprung, or heavy, weight at the corners, which helped explain the satisfactory, non-jarring ride. Yet, at more than 2,500 pounds, overall, for the test car with automatic transmission, the Fiesta didn't feel overly lightweight or tinny, either. This stable feel was enhanced by standard AdvanceTrac electronic stability control.

The Fiesta also has seven air bags, including one for the driver's knee to help keep the driver properly positioned behind the steering wheel during a frontal crash.

The five-star side government crash tests are impressive for the Fiesta, while frontal crash test results garnered four out of five stars.

The Honda Fit earned four out of five stars in side crash testing.

But the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic earned five out of five stars in both frontal and side crash testing.

Note that Ford had auto journalists recently test drive one of its small, European, turbocharged engines. While Ford made no promises of which U.S. car might get the powerplant, there is speculation that the Fiesta would be a good candidate.

Consumer Reports gives the Fiesta a below average reliability rating.

Complete Guide To Self Improvement: How To Use Creativity To ...

?Are there still original ideas in the world??

?They beat me to that bright idea; what else can I do??
?I?ve failed many times before that I can?t think of anything else to solve this problem anymore.?

These statements reflect the thought of an individual who has given up on creativity. Sadly, a lot of people share this way of thinking. They never viewed creativity as a very useful tool to improve or improvise in life in all its diversity.

A situation that requires a solution can be approached in a variety of ways. There isn?t a single way fix to a problem. Being creative opens new horizons and can deliver many benefits. Creativity can sometimes be mistakenly interpreted as an obstinate attitude. Some people think that insisting on doing things in a different way is a sign of stubbornness.

Never hold back a good idea. Everyone is free to interpret his own unique way. Any interpretation by itself is creativity at work. A person who enjoys creative thinking can easily come up with innovative solutions for situations that require a quick fix.

For instance, your car got stalled on a deserted highway due to a leaky rubber hose on the cooling system. Tough luck! Of all places, it had to happen in the remotest places.

If you have some chewing gum in your pocket, it just might be a handy fix. Start chewing the gum and patch it on the leak. To keep the gum in place, tie it with a piece of rag. This quick fix might do the trick so you can drive several miles without an overheated engine, until you get to a service station to have the leaky hose replaced.

There used to be a television series entitled ?MacGyver.? The main character is an extremely creative and crafty guy. Whenever he finds himself in a tight fix, he tries to find a way out of it with his quick fixes utilizing available materials around him.

In a way, creativity is a never-ending learning process. From learning, you gain untold benefits, which you can use in real life situations.

Being creative might require you to think out-of-the-box, venturing your mind into the uncommon. You can never be sure of your ideas until you try them. As long as there is no perceived danger involved, it is always worth a try.

Inventions are products of creative minds. The field of science, in whatever branch you may touch on, is invention itself. Without creative minds, science would have been a forlorn field of knowledge.

It must be noted that most adaptations to improve or improvise are aimed at improving current conditions. Upon analyzing honest applications of creativity, the ultimate intention is to achieve good for all and the will to build lasting peace. After all, this intention is what counts most.

Erich Fromm spelled it out clearly, ?The conditions for creativity are: to be puzzled, to concentrate, to accept conflict and tension, to be born everyday, and to feel a sense of self.?

    Recommended Gaming Computer

I originally posted this in the Market forum but that area seems dead. Here's my post..

I'm looking at upgrading and grabbing a new computer, preferably a gaming one.

I'm looking to spend a maximum of about ?800, but obviously cheaper the better. I currently have an old PC:

    • 4GB Ram
    • nVidia GeForce 8400GS
    • Quad Core @ 2.40GHz
    • 500MB HDD.

So the new PC should be better than that please
I'd prefer something with these specs:Also preferably available in the UK so I'm not paying daft prices for shipping. I'm asking on here as I know there are a lot of people who know their stuff about computers!

    Thank you

I'm not a techy with hardware, so if you're going to recommend a self-build then I'm gonna need a lot of help haha :P

That is pretty much the best video guide to it.

Also what are you looking to do exactly with your pc, as in what kind of gaming? any specific types of games? want wi-fi? storage?, etc
want a screen, speaker, etc as well in that budget?

I would also recommend a self build but if you're too against it I'll try recommend something pre-built. It is quite easy after watching some youtube videos

Gaming; I mainly play simulators - Flight Sim X, Trainz 2012, Sims 3
I'm not bothered about wifi as my router is right next to my pc anyway and I'm currently using an Ethernet cable. Storage anything that's decent really. I currently have 500mb and it seems too little. 1TB+?

?800 would just be the tower. I don't want a monitor as I'm currently using my TV for everything :P I'd be happy to keep my current wireless keyboard/mouse but would be happy to buy others outside of the 800 budget.

    I wouldn't mind self-building but I'd be hopeless selecting parts etc :/

you already got a windows dvd?

I play quite demanding games: Flight Sim X, Trainz 2012, Sims 3. I also don't have a windows dvd but I'd probably just buy a windows 7 one off Amazon or something if it's worth it.

You want a gaming computer to play SIMS?! SIMS?! Seriously? Sims needs very little graphical power. Unless you note an extreme lack of FPS, just upgrade your GFX. You don't need more RAM, just get yourself another 4GB stick, dirt cheap if it's DDR2.

    Re: Recommended Gaming Computer

But surely upgrading the GFX will do the job? Haha, that's scary but true, only just noticed! When I built my PC, 4GB DDR3, I paid ?82.

My PC originally came with 2x1GB ram. When I was in the process of upgrading it I read online on many pages that the max for my motherboard/pc was 2x2GB.. And I want a new pc anyway as I've had this for like 3-4 years. I'd love a stronger PC so I could play FSX etc more & better Maybe I could get San Andreas back and SA:MP

Idk if upgrading would do though for the reason I've just said hmm?

    Re: Recommended Gaming Computer

It's up to you. The only real problem you have is that your GFX could do with a bit more grunt. You can easily build a decent tower for ?500 that will play many high-end games for you. Don't bother getting a new hard drive, optical drive.

I'd probably just keep this one and wipe everything off it & start again, or get another and use both? Does that max 4GB ram sound correct though? May as well just start from scratch if I can't upgrade much. I also read that the PSU that comes with this PC is a piece of crap, and I haven't bothered upgrading it as I've noticed just how many cables there are lol.. Scary :P

PFT: Browns' Richardson to be back soon

Indianapolis Colts v Pittsburgh SteelersGetty Images

Colts rookie Andrew Luck seems like the kind of quarterback who?s not going to let a bad pass or a bad quarter or a bad game rattle him.

But he also showed there are a few things he has to work on in the Colts? 26-24 loss to Pittsburgh.

Luck has a degree of polish many passers do not have when they walk in the door. But he also hasn?t seen the things he will see, and that was evident in the early going against the Steelers.

His second interception was off the hands of rookie wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, and obviously not his fault. The first, however, was all him.?Luck zoomed in on his receiver, didn?t drive off his back foot and it was picked off by Ike Taylor and returned for a touchdown.

It?s the kind of pass he has to avoid making, as he doesn?t have the kind of elite arm strength to get away with such mistakes. That?s not to say he?s noodle-armed. His arm is sufficient. Not great, but strong enough, and coupled with his smarts, should enable him to be quite good.

But he?s young. The mistakes will happen.

But the fact he led touchdown drives after each of the picks shows he?s got a little something about him. He was 8-of-9 for 96 yards passing after the second one. That?s amnesia, and that?s special for a kid his age.

Here are some other things we learned on Sunday Night Football.

1. The league can say whatever it wants about the quality of replacement officials.

But even if they?re able to cram the rulebook the way I did for college exams and spit it back for the short term, there are important things they aren?t proving able to do.

First and foremost is executing the player-safety function of the job.

When Colts wide receiver Austin Collie left the game in the first half after taking a shot to the head from linebacker Larry Foote, but that was the first. Cornerback Ike Taylor got him high as well. If it?s a concussion, it?s four in the last two years for Collie.

Those are the shots the real refs are now conditioned to be vigilant for, and the replacements aren?t getting it done.

2. Everyone keeps saying they expect holdout wide receiver Mike Wallace to roll in any day now.

Maybe he should hurry, because the Steelers didn?t exactly look like they missed him.

The Steelers have already given Antonio Brown a spite contract in Wallace?s absence, then started funneling the ball his way.

Brown?s 57-yard touchdown catch-and-run, on national television, is the kind of thing that could get Wallace packing a bag and heading to Pittsburgh sooner rather than later.

3. Veteran Colts wideout Reggie Wayne?s going to move around more than he ever has this year, and he can still be a dangerous weapon.

It?s just going to take some time getting used to watching him go in motion.

The Colts don?t have the kind of protection and overall talent to go toe-to-toe with teams, so they?re going to have to use personnel groups and formations to mix it up.

And if Wayne?s willing to do stuff he?s never had to do before, that?s just part of the mix.

4. ?Speaking of that talent: Other than Wayne, the Colts receivers aren?t much to look at. But their tight ends could be something.

In Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, they have a pair of players who could grow with Luck for years.

They?re smart to give him safe options in the passing game since he doesn?t have much on the outside.

5. Chuck Pagano?s striking the right note with this whole ?Build the Monster,? thing he?s selling, passing out shirts with the slogan and the Colts at the bottom of a power ranking.

NFL teams are so evenly clumped that you can get from bad to decent in a hurry.? Usually if it was bad enough for a coaching change, the holdovers are disgruntled and looking for an attitude change too. Picking a fight with anyone (media, opponent, the man) is a sure way to rally the troops.

The Colts aren?t going to the playoffs, but they could be better. Having an edge can be worth three or four wins.

6. Get well soon, Max Starks.

The Steelers need you.

Rookie left tackle Mike Adams might get ready at some point. That point is not now.

7.?The Florio Research Network points out that Adam Vinatieri?s 53-yard field goal before the half was a new Heinz Field record by a yard. The old mark of 52 was held by Jeff Reed.

8.?Colts backup QB Drew Stanton now has more touchdowns this preseason than Jets quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow combined.

Who?s sorry now?

9. Sometimes it takes lower-case L luck. The Colts had a special teams meeting in the backfield, and the game-winning field goal by the Steelers still crept across. No real explanation, and the grin on Mike Tomlin?s face said it all.

Recovery Steps For Small Business Owners

?Everyone has a plan ? until they get punched in the face.? ~ Mike Tyson, Retired American Professional Boxer

business punch

Business is easy until things go wrong. Our dreams are big on paper, but in the daylight, where the work has to get done and we have to face our competition, things can easily fall apart without a recovery plan.

There are all kinds of disasters that your company can face: ?weather, health, economic, team issues.

Regardless of the nature of the beast, the first step is still the same ? plan for what you can and you will find yourself prepared for the unexpected.

Create Systems and Then Plan for System Failures

Every company has a modus operandi, a way that they do things. That standard needs to be documented and taught to every new team member as well as drilled into the entire team periodically. But plan for the system to fall apart.

For example, if bad weather blocks your traditional way of communicating with your staff, how will you get a message to them? Phone, text, email, the news, carrier pigeon? If your regular system fails, plan for a back-up ? ahead of time.

It?s true, you can?t catch or anticipate every issue. But the practice of preparation will train your mind to see answers. It will also train your team to do the same thing. ?Think about it, you did it in school. You had fire drills and tornado drills so that everybody knew how to move, just in case. Do the same thing in business.

Attract a Core Clientele and Then Find a Way to Reach a New But Relevant Secondary Market

It?s easy to weather the storm when their isn?t one.? But what if something happened to your core client base? What if their income changed, like the middle class spending habits in this ongoing economic shift?

When you?re recovery minded, preparing for the punch in the face,?then you look for options. You may reposition and repackage what you have. You may expand your market to one income bracket above or below your current clientele. You may add a complimentary product.

This is not about grasping at straws, but expanding your brand in a natural direction and on purpose.

The key to effective recovery planning is to start it before you need it. That simple decision will cause you to have fewer emergencies.

Florida Veterinarian Appears to Take Down 12-Term GOP House Rep. Stearns

Twelve-term Rep. Cliff Stearns trails his Republican primary opponent in Florida with 100 percent of precincts reporting.

Tea partyer Ted Yoho, a veterinarian and political newcomer, leads Stearns by 829 votes in a shocking upset, the Associated Press reported. Redistricting forced Stearns into a geographically larger, newly drawn district stretching north and west of his old territory, into Florida's panhandle.

One of Stearns' opponents, Clay County Clerk of Courts James Jett, alleged in March that Stearns had attempted to bribe him out of the race through a middleman. A Stearns spokesman denied the accusation. Jett ranks fourth in the unexpectedly crowded primary with 14 percent.

The winner of tea-party straw polls in Gainesville, Gilchrist and Lake City, Yoho ran a TV ad comparing career politicians to pigs in slop, promising new leadership and a repeal of "Obamacare." He recorded a YouTube video with a George W. Bush impersonator in which they bemoaned the Obama administration.

If results hold, Stearns will exit Congress after serving for 24 years. He made headlines as top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations subcommittee with investigations into solar-panel maker Solyndra and steroid use in pro wrestling.

Girls with ADHD more prone to self-injury, suicide as they enter adulthood

Girls with ADHD more prone to self-injury, suicide as they enter adulthood [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 14-Aug-2012

University of California - Berkeley

Visible symptoms can go undercover, UC Berkeley psychologists find

Girls with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and their families often look forward to the likely decline in visible symptoms such as fidgety or disruptive behavior as they mature into young women.

However, new findings from UC Berkeley caution that, as they enter adulthood, girls with histories of ADHD are more prone to internalize their struggles and feelings of failure a development that can manifest itself in self-injury and even attempted suicide.

"Like boys with ADHD, girls continue to have problems with academic achievement and relationships, and need special services as they enter early adulthood," said Stephen Hinshaw, UC Berkeley professor of psychology and lead author of a study that reports after 10 years on the largest-ever sample of girls whose ADHD was first diagnosed in childhood.

"Our findings of extremely high rates of cutting and other forms of self-injury, along with suicide attempts, show us that the long-term consequences of ADHD females are profound," he added.

The study is published today (Tuesday, August 14) in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Its results are consistent with earlier findings by the UC Berkeley team that, as girls with ADHD grow older, they show fewer visible symptoms of the disorder, but continue to suffer in hidden ways. The findings challenge assumptions that girls can "outgrow" ADHD, and underscore the need for long-term monitoring and treatment of the disorder, Hinshaw said.

The longitudinal study, which began when the girls were ages 6 to 12, is funded by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health. Since 1997, Hinshaw and his team have tracked a racially and socio-economically diverse group of girls with ADHD in the San Francisco Bay Area through early childhood summer camps, adolescence and now early adulthood. In addition to this new study, many others have been published by the team about the girls every five years.

In the United States, more than 5 million children ages 3-17 approximately one in 11 have been diagnosed with ADHD, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ADHD is characterized by poor concentration, distractibility, hyperactivity, impulsiveness and other symptoms that are inappropriate for the child's age. Evidence-based treatment includes stimulant medications and various forms of behavior therapy.

The new UC Berkeley study, assessing the girls 10 years after it began, examined 140 of them, ages 17-24, comparing their behavioral, emotional and academic development to that of a demographically similar group of 88 girls without ADHD. It also gauged the symptoms of two major ADHD subtypes: Those who entered the study with poor attention alone versus those who had a combination of inattention plus high rates of hyperactivity and impulsivity.

The study's major finding was that the group with combined inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity during childhood was by far the most likely to manifest self-injury and suicide attempts in early adulthood. In fact, the study pointed out, more than half of the members of this subgroup were reported to have engaged in self-injurious behavior, and more than one-fifth had attempted suicide, Hinshaw said.

"A key question is why, by young adulthood, young women with ADHD would show a markedly high risk for self-harm Impulse control problems appear to be a central factor," the study said.

In the first study on this group, published in 2002, the 6- to- 12-year old girls attended five-week camps where they were closely monitored as they partook in art and drama classes and outdoor activities. Those taking ADHD medication volunteered to go off the drug treatment for much of the summer camp study. The counselors and staff observing all the participants did not know which of them had been diagnosed with ADHD.

That study found that girls with ADHD were more likely to struggle academically and to be rejected by their peers, compared to the comparison peer group. The five-year follow-up study, when the girls were 12 to 17 and experiencing early to mid-adolescence, found that the fidgety and impulsive symptoms tended to subside in the early teen years, but that the learning gap between girls with ADHD and their non-ADHD peers had widened, and eating disorders and substance abuse had surfaced.

For the latest study, in which 95 percent of the original sample of girls participated, the researchers conducted intensive interviews with the subjects and their families. Those interviews include personal reports on behaviors such as self-harm and suicide attempts, drug use, eating habits and driving behavior.

Researchers also measured key cognitive functions such as executive planning skills, which include goal-setting and monitoring, planning and keeping on task despite distractions.

While many girls in the study showed improvement in ADHD symptoms during the 10-year period, certain problems persisted and new ones emerged, suggesting that careful monitoring and treatment are essential, Hinshaw said.

"The overarching conclusion is that ADHD in girls portends continuing problems, through early adulthood," the study concluded. "Our findings argue for the clinical impact of ADHD in female samples, the public health importance of this condition on girls and women, and the need for ongoing examination of underlying mechanisms, especially regarding the high risk of self-harm in young adulthood."

That said, Hinshaw added, "ADHD is a treatable condition, as long as interventions are monitored carefully and pursued over a number of years."
