European team calls off Iran visit

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? A delegation from the European Parliament has called off plans to visit Iran after being refused guarantees they could visit two jailed activists awarded freedom prizes, officials said Sunday.

The trip, scheduled for its first full day on Sunday, had brought criticism from some conservative European politicians, claiming it sent mixed messages as the European Union tightens sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program. A senior Iranian lawmaker, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, was quoted by the semiofficial Mehr news agency as blaming Israeli pressure for the cancellation.

But Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament, said the decision was made after Iranian authorities said the five-member delegation could not visit with jailed Iranian dissidents Nasrin Sotoudeh and Jafar Panahi.

The European Parliament awarded the 2012 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Soutedeh, a human rights lawyer, and Panahi, a filmmaker who won the Camera d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. Both were charged with roles in supporting the opposition in post-election unrest in 2009.

The European delegates hoped to personally deliver invitations for the award ceremony in Strasbourg in December.

Tarja Cronberg, a Finn who chairs the European Parliament delegation for relations with Iran, was told by the Iranian ambassador to the European Union on Saturday that it was impossible to guarantee a visit to Tehran's Evin prison "at such short notice." Cronberg then decided to cancel the trip, which has been scheduled to run to Nov. 2 and include meetings with Iranian lawmakers and representatives from civil society groups.

"I deeply regret that permission to meet the Sakharov laureates was withheld," Schulz said. "The European Parliament is nevertheless determined to continue its support for and involvement with the Iranian civil society."

The Iranian lawmaker Boroujerdi was quoted as saying that the visit was cancelled after Iran rejected preconditions. He heads the parliament's Committee on National Security.

Meanwhile, a German parliamentary committee arrived in Tehran for a six-day visit on Sunday, Mehr reported.

Mehr quoted Hossein Sheikholeslam, an adviser to Iran's parliamentary speaker, that the German group has already arrived in the country and are on the visit to central Iranian city of Isfahan.

The group will meet several Iranian top lawmakers as well as the director of the human rights committee of the Iranian Foreign Ministry. They also are scheduled to visit Qom, the center of Shiite religious study about 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Tehran.

The trip by the group has been scheduled within the Iran-Germany parliamentary friendship group, headed by Iranian-born Bijan Jirsarai, a member of Germany's parliament. Before tighter EU sanctions, Germany was a major trading partner with Iran.

Sony is working on a new video game console to succeed the swiftly maturing PlayStation 3. Codenamed Orbis, the PlayStation 4 will do a number of things according to various sources within and without Sony. The PlayStation 4 will support 4K playback. Following its acquisition of streaming video game company Gaikai, Sony?s executives have hinted that the PlayStation 4 will itself offer cloud-based streaming service. From the sound of things, the new device will continue Sony?s sometimes ill-advised strategy of making the most powerful piece of consumer tech it can. What about the games though? Who is making software that will actually run on the machine?

Sony, of course. PlayStation 4 game development, however, is reportedly causing some strain on the company?s internal studios.

?We do have a challenge to manage [the next generation of consoles], particularly in terms of dev studio resources,? said PlayStation UK managing director Fergal Gara in an interview with Computer and Video Games, ?The more platforms you have, and the amount of rich content you have to deliver on all the systems you are supporting clearly puts pressure on decisions made across the studio network, which is something we are battling with.?

The problem according to Gara is that Sony doesn?t feel that it?s fully saturated the global PlayStation 3 market. The company did claim in 2006 that it would support the console for ten years, and while sales have cooled in the US, it still sees opportunity in Europe. ?When you look at the UK market, it?s easy to say that current consoles are fading. But if you look at PS3, it?s holding up a lot better than others, so it warrants support. But if you look at continental Europe, PS3 hasn?t even peaked yet. Why would you run away from a console business when you?re not even top of the hill? We?re certainly not going to run away from it.?

Sony is in an unenviable position in the game hardware business. Microsoft?s next Xbox has been in developers? hands for some time, and expectations are that the device will be out next fall. Considering how Sony has priced new models of the PlayStation 3 going into Christmas, it?s clear that the company aims to have that machine as its primary focus for at least another calendar year. Third-party publishers may have reason to continue supporting the device with the comparable Wii U on shelves, but Sony can?t offer true parity with Nintendo?s machine without bundling the expensive, failing PS Vita handheld in with its home hardware. Meanwhile, its first party development teams continue to stretch themselves thinner and thinner. They have to support three platforms, one that?s unreleased, all while Sony is shuttering studios. Difficult times for CEO Kaz Hirai?s ward.

"There are times where you just have to grind it out, because it's hard," Obama told wealthy donors at a softly lit dinner in Los Angeles, speaking almost quietly even with a microphone in his hand. "It's hard work bringing about change."

On Obama's trail, the current narrative is about his strangely listless appearance in last week's debate. Yes, it left a major impression on the race, and given the enormous TV audience that saw it, Obama chose a bad day to have a bad day.

Yet Obama has also turned in upbeat appearances since then, revving up one late-night concert-hall crowd to the point of screams. He has found peace in the company of longtime friends traveling with him on Air Force One, and energy from teenagers just waiting to shake his hand, and glee in improvising ways to mock Republican rival Mitt Romney for targeting Big Bird.

Despite his trademark steadiness, Obama tends to turn in campaign performances that mirror the crowd and the setting. There is no one feel. He soaks up enthusiasm and shares it back when the audience is rocking, yet he can seem flat if his listeners are.

The more representative feel of life around Obama is the determined, difficult lift of everything he wants to do.

It was telling that his convention speech was remarkably short on inspiration, emphasizing instead that he offered voters a hard path, but one that would lead the country to a better place.

His message in rallies and fundraisers is no different.

"I always said that change takes time," he said. "We always said that it would take more than one term. ... And by the way, no, it doesn't just take me. That's not the deal. The deal is it takes all of us."

At times Obama almost sounds like voters inked a contract with him, and they need to renew it. Not exactly the stuff of tingles for Obama supporters who show up looking for that.

But it does reflect a campaign that recognizes this is no 2008, when Obama was the fresh voice, and helped by the anti-incumbency mood of voters who saw Republican Sen. John McCain as a version of President George W. Bush.

It was this time back then, during October's chill, that Obama's campaign took on the anticipatory feel of victory. Obama recalls it as a period with "all the things we had going for us ? all the way that things just kind of converged."

Yet even on that feel-good front, Obama offers tough lessons for voters.

"Back in 2008, everybody always remembers the victory. Things always look good in retrospect," he said. "But in the middle of it, we made all kinds of mistakes. We goofed up. I goofed up. But the American people carried us forward."

Such is the period Obama is in now.

It's been one of the hardest of the campaign. His aides are still dealing with questions about the last debate and eager to get to the next one, but insistent that Obama never loses perspective.

He spoke about it often during a reflective campaign swing that took him from the donor-rich events of California on Sunday and Monday to the campus of Ohio State University on Tuesday.

When a classmate from his Hawaii school days, Pam Hamamoto, welcomed him to a fundraiser in San Francisco, Obama turned to her and said, "That was the sweetest introduction I've had since I've been president."

It didn't take, long, though for him to get down to business again. Sure, some hope. But mostly hard work.

"I very much intend to win this election," he said, "but we're only going to do it if everybody is almost obsessive."

It offers a simple and easy way to edit the videos on your Android phone or tablet automatically. It?s a clever app which analyzes the footage you?ve shot and splices it together to create a good-looking movie which is then easy to share with friends and family.

In today?s Developing Minds Want to Know, we talk to Dr, Oren Boiman of SightEra Technologies, the parent company of Magisto. He discusses what inspired him to become an app creator, how he harness innovation and where he sees the future of the mobile industry heading over the coming years.

APPOLICIOUS: What inspired you to become an app creator?

OREN BOIMAN: I founded Magisto because of the personal frustration of trying to edit my first born daughter?s videos. It was difficult enough on a destkop, and almost impossible to do right on a smartphone. Obviously, it takes time to develop that level of artificial intelligence that enables a computer to think like a human video editor. Once we got that working, we built an iOS app and then an Android client to provide ?video editing in a click? to everyone carrying a smartphone.

We also just recently announced that consumers can edit videos stored on Google Drive, automatically. Right now our Drive integration is available via our web and YouTube applications and the new Chrome extension, but we are working on providing consumers with the ability to use it within our mobile Magisto apps in the near future as well. In the meantime, Android users can install the Magisto Chrome app from the Chrome Web app store to create Magisto movies using Drive integration on mobile.How long have you been developing apps, and what is the most significant difference between now and when you began?

We launched a web app and an app integrated inside YouTube.com in September, 2011. But, we quickly understood that mobile apps can provide a way better user experience. ?So, we launched the iOS client at CES 2012 -and won first prize! Since then, Android has established itself as the largest platform for App developers, but all in all, Apps are more important right now than any other software platform (desktop, laptops).

APPO: What apps (outside of those that you develop) inspire you the most and why?

OB: Evernote, Dropbox to mention a few, because they understand that it is not just the mobile app, but existence over all platforms and eco-systems that sets your product apart. Their monetization strategy works equally well on all platforms.

APPO: Where do you see the most innovation in the app sector?

OB: I think that the photography sector is the most innovative (especially video), as it completely revolutionizes the basic concepts of photography. I believe that in a few years from now, capturing video/photo without an app to process and share them will be inconceivable. Photography ? photos and ideos ? has been essentially reinvented.

APPO: How do you harness that innovation in your own titles?

OB: We combine unprecedented sophistication of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities in the cloud, with the 24h connectivity of the video camera on the smartphone to give every user the impression that Magisto brings a whole professional casting crew ? director, editor, producer ? ready to help you tell your story, in real-time, 24-7. The ?blown-away? responses, positivereviews, and very high ratings (higher than any video creation app in iOS, e.g. iMovie) tells it all.

APPO: In such a crowded space, explain how you generate awareness and drive downloads to your applications.

AB: At the end of the day, you need a killer app to make people talk about you and ?spread the word?. All other channels are available to everyone and don?t provide differentiation. But it?s not just direct to consumers ? we have a lot of interest from tier 1 device manufacturers and operators that are interested to help distribute the app in their eco-system.

APPO: What are the biggest technical constraints that exist today in the app sector?

OB: Getting your app to provide a consistently good UX on all platforms as they evolve (more screen sizes, hardware capabilities, operating system versions etc.)

APPO: How do you (or will you) make money from your application?

OB: On top of the basic level of features available for any Magisto user, on iOS we have a premium subscription service. This will be shortly available on Android.

APPO: What advice do you have to those working on their first applications?

OB: Work iteratively ? launch something small, learn, improve and iterate. It?s very difficult to get it right on the first shot. That?s a good recipe for not wasting your time and improving your chances to develop something users really want.

APPO: Where do you see the app sector one year from now? Five years from now?

OB: In general, we will see more and more apps, but this means that app discoverability is going to be more important than ever. Utilizing multiple discoverability platforms will become one of the most important parts of marketing your app. Moreover, due to the multiple screen usage that increases, apps that are relevant on all platforms and eco-systems will have a significant advantage. This means that funded companies or startups will have better chance to develop these apps as this takes time and money. So, although there will be more and more apps, the apps that will be actually used will cause some consolidation in the app market (quite similar to what happened on the PC market after the first happy days of shareware software).

Researcher: First Quantum Computers are 5 to 10 ... - Tom's Hardware

Australian researchers claim to have passed a significant milestone toward quantum computers as they said they were able to create the first qubit based on a single atom in silicon.

The scientists consider their achievement a major breakthrough as they were able to use a common material and they stressed that only 300 qubits would be required to store "a number greater than the number of particles in the universe."

According to a paper published in the journal Nature, the researchers are able to use their discovery to read and write information from and to the qubit. There was no information about the storage duration, which remains a key problem in this field. However, they believe that "quantum computation" would now be possible within "1 to 2 years" and "transporting quantum information across chips" within 3 to 4 years, Australian IT writes. Everything combined, their vision is that the first quantum computers could be built in about 5 to 10 years.

In the next step, the researchers aim to create pairs of quantum bits and build a two-qubit logic gate as the basic foundation of a quantum computer. "This has never been done before in silicon, a material that offers the advantage of being well understood scientifically and more easily adopted by industry," said Andrea Morello, who is part of the research effort. "Our technology is fundamentally the same as is already being used in countless everyday electronic devices, and that's a trillion-dollar industry."

Electoral map appears largely written in stone

Many see potential for Wednesday's presidential debate to be a deciding moment in the 2012 election. From the Signal's perch here on Forecasting Mountain, we don't see a whole lot left to be decided.

Since we posted our first forecast of the state-by-state presidential election on Feb. 16, 2012, six months before the Republican Party even had an official nominee, only three states have flipped camps at any point in time. Virginia pointed toward the Republican nominee for several months during the summer, while both Florida and North Carolina have recently shifted to President Barack Obama's column. Almost all of the other 47 states have moved further in whichever direction they were leaning in February as the game clock has ticked down from more than 250 days to fewer than 40 until the election.

In February, we predicted that Obama would win re-election with 303 electoral votes. That estimate fell to 290 when Virginia flipped to the Republican column, and now stands at 347 with the restoration of Virginia and the addition of Florida and North Carolina.

The forecasts were flat until mid-May, as we had little new information to update the forecast, which was then totally reliant on economic and historical data that doesn't update daily. We then?added in polls and prediction market data, which gradually takes over the forecast as Election Day approaches. The forecasts from February are the best estimation we can make about a generic Democratic incumbent running against a generic Republican challenger. By Election Day, the forecast is full of information about how the public views the actual Democratic incumbent against the actual Republican challenger.

Virginia and Florida were the least secure states for their respective candidates in our early forecast. North Carolina appeared to be a safe Republican win, but leapfrogged over three states we saw as less securely Republican to now favor Obama slightly. We expect this to happen in a few states each cycle. North Carolina was about 75 percent likely to vote for the Republican nominee in February, and now it is a little over 50 percent for Obama. Georgia, Indiana, and Missouri were all less safely Republican than North Carolina in February, but now appear safely pointing toward Romney.

Almost every other state has broken hard toward the likely winner in the past six months. Every day that the underdog candidate does not close the gap in a state, it becomes more likely to vote for the expected winner. As we have noted before, forecasting elections is less about uncertainty on Election Day than uncertainty over what can happen between the forecast and Election Day.

Arizona and Wisconsin are the only other states, besides Florida and North Carolina, that have not broken hard toward the likely winner since February. Arizona is lingering as very likely for Romney as Obama considers making a play for the state. Wisconsin is still slowly drifting toward Obama, but it briefly stalled its march when Romney nominated native son Paul Ryan as his running mate.

Fight the power cream of tomato soup | Walbert's Compendium

We twenty-first-century Americans are all, whether we like it or not, products of a certain amount of marketing. If we grew up with television, or even with magazines, certain notions of what we ought to eat and when are embedded in our brains, and half of them were invented out of whole cloth by Madison Avenue.

So, for example: it got cold this week, I left the windows open all night, and by lunchtime Monday the house was still cooler inside than most people would heat it in the winter ? and felt even cooler than that from the shock of the sudden temperature change. And I felt strongly that I simply must have a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of cream of tomato soup.

Why? I never even liked tomato soup as a kid. I didn?t like much of anything with cooked tomato in it, and I detested canned condensed cream of tomato soup ? still do. But I have this gnawing feeling that it is what I?m supposed to eat for lunch when I?m cold. There was some kid in a TV commercial eating Campbell?s soup, probably, and my mother always had it around, and tomato is the iconic flavor. (Thank you, Andy Warhol.)

Soup is good food, but if I give in to the marketing, I feel like a tool. (Thank you, Jello Biafra.) I could root out these notions one by one and devote half my life to the project. I could reject them by making tomato soup from scratch and make the best damn tomato soup ever, but then I?d also have devoted half my life to the project. Either way the buggers would have beaten me just as surely as if I?d bought a case of cans from the grocery store.

So what I do, instead, when I get these cravings, is to figure out easy ways to make what I want. Half an hour or less, most of it unattended, or done half-assedly while I?m answering emails at the kitchen table. Because if it?s easy, nobody needs Big Food to do it for us. And, more important, because I can get lunch on the table and get on with my life.

Easy also means that I?m not going to write you what has come to be considered a Proper Recipe, with precisely measured ingredients, because I don?t measure ingredients precisely when I make soup. Precise measurement seems frankly contrary to the whole idea of soup. Or of comfort food. Let alone of Fighting The Power or Sticking It To The Man.

And, finally, as I said last time, I?m not going to get overly picky about what?s ?from scratch.? I don?t make my own vermouth from local muscadine grapes and herbs I grow in my garden, I?m sorry. I buy Noilly Prat. I don?t can my own tomatoes, either (don?t have a big enough garden). Punk was always kind of a pose anyway.

Chop a smallish onion, or half a larger one. Cook it in a little butter until it?s soft but not brown. (Not that there?s anything wrong with brown. It?s your soup.) If you like, add a little crushed garlic for the last minute, but I find that garlic + tomato makes me think spaghetti, so I leave it out.

Pour in a few tablespoons of dry vermouth and let it boil a half a minute or so. That was Julia Child?s suggestion: keep dry vermouth around for occasions when you need a little bit of white wine for cooking. It adds a layer of flavor, too, from the herbal infusion; it?s like getting seasoned salt with your wine.

Dump in a standard-sized (28 oz) can of whole or diced tomatoes, whichever you have around, or a quart of home-canned tomatoes if you have them. Or fresh tomatoes, if they?re in season, though if you don?t seed them first you may find yourself wanting to strain the soup when it?s done. The better the tomatoes, the better the soup, obviously.

Add a little salt (half a teaspoon to start if you?re measuring), and a few sprigs of fresh thyme, if you have them, or else a pinch of dried. (Fresh is easy enough to grow in a pot on your window sill.) Simmer for 15 minutes or so.

At this point you will probably want to pur?e the soup. If you used fresh thyme, fish the stems out now. They will have lost most of their leaves. You could have stripped the leaves and thrown only them in, but I can?t stand stripping thyme. If, however, you mind that fussy sort of thing less than I do, or if you fear you will forget to fish the stems out before pur?eing the soup, by all means, strip them.

Now to the pur?eing. I have an immersion blender ? not something I would buy now if I didn?t have one, but it?s nice once you have it ? and I sort of lazily half-pur?e the soup right in the pot and leave it a little chunky. A blender or food processor will work. It doesn?t have to be perfectly smooth. If you used diced tomatoes, you don?t even necessarily have to pur?e the soup; you can leave it chunky.

Return the soup to the pot and add some cream ? a quarter cup, maybe, and then taste it and see if it needs more. If you don?t have any cream, sour cream or yogurt would be good, but don?t let it boil. Or evaporated milk, I suppose.

If it needs more salt, add it, and grind in some pepper and maybe a few dashes of Tabasco.

Warm it back up and serve it.
